I'm more and more convinced of paratroopers.
I nuke a city, take it with paras and send some stealth fighters in. The first thing I build (after a temple) is an airport (military support AND engineers), then two or three engineers to clean the mess.
    What's your opinion of them?

Combined with stealth fighters paras make great city capturing weapons. They're also a lot of fun to drop into enemy territory to block railroads, pillage ect ect. They may not be the best unit in the game, but they're an awful lot of fun.
Libraries are state sanctioned, so they're technically engaged in privateering. - Felch

Paras are especially great at creating a flank attack, disrupting the opponent's line of reinforcements. The other thing I love is the ability to take out nearby island cities without the need to transport troops.

Paratroopers are also good recon units. Type 'p', then move the cursor all around the area before you actually attack. If you can't land on that tile, it is occupied. You don't know by whom or how many, but it reveals troop positions.

I don't use nukes in my games (I will even go to great lengths to sabotage any Manhattan Project), so I will often use paratroopers to recon and secure my path to the target city. Drop them into a fortress or mountain and kill whoever is standing around.
