    Always use 2 pillars:
    -bribe/steal/poison/backstab
-If I have the army: massive attack in such a way the AI gets decimated in the first turn

The strength of Civ 2 is that there are so many successful ways of winning. Generally speaking I believe the best strategy is one based upon gold...large stacks of it! With it you can rush build an army or anything you choose...without it you must wait for events to take their course.

Let the game unfold a little before making final descions about conquest or spaceship. It's difficult to build a decent Super Science City if most of your specials are Iron, Coal or Buffalo. With such terrain you may be better off using the high shield rate to build a vet army/navy and go hunting.

SG posted it so well : there's so many strategies
Often, I play perfectionnist, a few big cities under republic and then try to conquer the world with an economic and technological edge.
But sometimes the OCC challenge appeals to me.
And what about some total war, just to remember how to do it.
          With or without ICS.

And it all depends on the level and on the starting area, especially on deity. I might decide of a strategy on the 1st turns. Or when I customize the world

Indeed there is not one strategy for me and that's why I like civ2 so much

If I'm close to enemy, without enemy knowing, I will try a surprise attack and go monarchy. If I'm stuck on a small island, then I will go republic and crank out trade. If I'm in early battle, I will go monarchy first, and then turn republic later. All depends on situations and opponent's playing style.

That depends on the level I play and the map size an.
When I find an AI early on "my" continent, I give them no chance -they will be wiped out.
Since I only play the space race (I'm a "peaceful" guy, I try to keep peace, but when the AI declare war on me, I'll extinguish them).
In the lower levels: I settle, settle, settle. The more cities, the better.
In the upper levels I stop settling after 20-30 cities, I build market-places, banks and other city improvements and tons of caravans.
For war is expensive, I try to avoid it. I usually switch to fundamentalism, build spies and bribe the hell ...
There are no silly questions - only silly answers

                No war at all!

I like science/trade victory= AC landing. I try not to go to war with AI, researching at full speed (rep+demo) with lot of caravans.
Few defensive units tons of diplos/spies and some key Wow.
But still learning how to micromanage.

                  1) Expand until my borders are secure, either by taking the continent I'm on or controlling good checkpoints.
                  2) Once the borders are secure, play perfectionist and head for AC
                  3) The exception is when I have to invoke the Rufus Rule: a sneak attack costs the AI a city. Usually use diplos for this.

Build, trade, expand, trade, trade, trade, and trade. If the AI insists on being punished, I will venture out and spank it thoroughly. Mostly I focus the core of my empire on wonders and wealth, and use outposts and frontier cities for war. I generally like to control the seas, too.

I expand until stopped, then bribe cities. I build as many wonders as I can. My capitol city is science city and wonder city. I plan on world conquest, but I rarely finish them off once I am dominant.

i expand and expand and expand......anyone in my path is assimilated and/or destroyed......

those on other continents are used for two purposes...trade and then conquest.

i play games where i build spaceships, but the Mongols prefer warlike heroes..not peacenik visionaries....and i must listen to the people of course...plus i thirst for the ai's a$$

A great weakness of the game is it favours hoard players.
