I know this is a really cheap strategy, but if you really like to have a nice, long time boefore you even have to think about fighting a war, play as the Americans on the large world map with the choose AI civilizations option and make sure no one is the Sioux or Aztecs.

That's why the game offers the options to achieve that position. It's called isolationism. It's a perfectly legitimate approach to the game. If a tad on the dull side.
