  • Specialist in size 4 cities

I thought it was interesting that when you build a settler in a size 5 city that has specialists, you keep them. Although in theory you should not be able to have specialist in a size 4 city. This is especially good with 2 * production when you don't have to worry about the food production.

yes this happens to me quite frequently, and being the newbie that i am i always figured it was moot so i removed the other scientist and put him back to work. I never once bothered to check to see if he was more productive as a specialist I wonder how many games i have lost by this , er.... probably not many

I often end up with the fourth citizen as an entertainer in some cities as the empire rapidly exceeds the limits of the governments available. They seem to work fine. Wasn't aware of a limit like "5 citizens before first specialist," at least in 2.42.

One more for your list of Undocumented Features! Isn't it amazing that after all this time, something as basic as this turns up? 'Course, there are a lot more Size 5 cities around now for some reason.

            Blaupanzer,

The "rule" might be better stated:

You can't turn a citizen into a scientist or taxman if the city has fewer than five citizens.

My version is happy to let me have as many entertainers as I want (thank heavens) but enforces the above rule about other specialists.

If I recall correctly, Xin Yu mentioned that as an essential part of his "Size 5 city" strategy a month or 2 ago.

The idea was (I think) to get cities to size 5, assign some workers as scientists (or was it taxmen) and then you could let them build down through hunger for a number of turns, getting greater benefits from the specialists than the loss of regular population would be.

It was a very difficult strategy to maintain, but I tried it and found the results favorable. I just don't remember to follow it closely enough in regular games.

I too use the size 5 strategy on a selective basis.
But I don't remember Xin advocating that you starve your cities down a size... Yes, he did starve them, but he didn't let them drop a pop.

That's a funny rhyme. I don't know why, it just is.

I do this all the time... in 2x production games when I have exactly 8 food, or just really badly need a settler.
