  • Automating Settlers/Engineers - Anyone do it?

I was playing a rather dull cheating game (created a map for my own civilization and kept all others on a barren, inescapable continent) when I got sick of telling Engs what to do - so I pressed "k" and got them to do their own stuff.

I've never really been impressed with the results. I want them to turn deserts into grasslands with Railroad, but they tended to simply irrigate, make some roads, and go away.

Is there any way of getting settlers/engineers to do what you want them to do? Or is this one of the goals of Civ 3?

Automated settlers/engineers are just stupid. You're better off controlling them manually.

Automated settlers... HA HA HA HA!

The only thing they are good for is to irrigate squares with no access to water.
But some would consider this a cheat
