  • What determines the tech discovery rate?

Does anyone know exactly how the science discovery rate is determined? I know it has something to do with how many techs you have or maybe even how many you have relative to the other civs but it would be helpful to know.
For example, I used to think that finding techs in huts or trading techs at the beginning was a great thing. Now I see it more as a curse than as a blessing, especially if I don't have monarchy yet. If my discovery rate is every 10 turns and I get a useless tech like warrior code in a hut it usually jumps to something like 15 turns. And if I trade more than one tech with another civ it sets me back even more (to like every 25+ turns).
I'm starting to think that it's a strategic mistake to trade for any techs that don't lead to monarchy at the beginning.

    deity -

There are a set number of beakers needed to discover each tech. For example, the 1st tech you research may require 10 beakers, the second 18 beakers, the 3rd 25.... and so on. There are a few lists of the number of beakers needed for deity level on this site. But as for how many turns it takes you to research.... You take the number of beakers you are producing a turn (look in the... um... stupid me can't remember the window's name but the shortcut key is F5) divide that into the number of beakers needed for that discovery. Por ejemple (is that the right spanish term? i need to shapen my skills, i just started span 3 this semester) if you're producing 6 beakers a turn, and it takes 18 for the advance... 3 turns! and you're right with the hut thing, any unwanted techs just make you wait longer. Hope this makes sense.

Quite right, Deity, trading techs with the AI early on - unless it's for Monarchy, or something equally compelling - is a no-no.

Yah there is nothing worse than tipping huts only to get Horseback Riding and Warrior Code and masonry..... then its like 30 turns to monarchy..... unless a civ offers to trade one of the techs to monarchy or monarchy itself i will avoid trading until after monarchy ... i believe as Finnie said that is a no np

But there is still more good things that happen than bad, so you roll the dice. I have been waiting on some huts till i have cites built in there range to minimize the barb aspect, but every now and then it's fun to trip a hut and get monarchy.

I was wondering what is the chances of tipping huts before founding yoy first city and getting monarchy. Has it occurred very often in all of you civ2 experts games?

              Thanks

Yeah, I got it once on the first hut prior to building my capital. If i remember correctly i started with a gob of free sciences that game. I've never done it in an MP game since we restart if the host has techs to start.

The chances of getting Monarchy in a hut are slim(gotta have the pre reqs at least) but it does happen occasionally.
