I bet you'll get a different answer on every forum here, Civ2MP in this case,...however.....other options exist....

If you're looking a for a civ like MP game why not try out Freeciv? Sort of a Civ2MP-Pro with special micro management functions and perfect for MP. You can also play SP but it shines in MP. Plus it also keeps complete records of MP games played on the civserver. Similar to the original Civ1 endgame system. So afterwards you can show off your "victories" with a glass of brandy.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Freeciv eh? sounds interesting, I shall investigate further.

I also have been looking for some new MP strat game. I looked into all this MOO3 hoo-ha a couple of weeks ago... should I be excited?
I have discovered that China and Spain are really one and the same country, and it's only ignorance that leads people to believe they are two seperate nations. If you don't belive me try writing 'Spain' and you'll end up writing 'China'."

no probably not.....its hard to make a real good long term mp game....

it has to appeal to the player through all stages of the game...

many games are over quickly etc, or have time limits...they appeal to players b/c of the quick fix appeal.

matching your opponent wit for wit, hour for hour, day over day.....is difficult to do

Obviously there is no comparison in complexity but if I only have half an hour to play something I play online Risk at www.dominategame.com

I wondered how long it would take.

Tbh Strat not many TBS games have a large MP following, and Civ2 is the best anyway.

If you are willing to branch out a little take a look at Utopia (which I think Mr4ever used to play a bit), and maybe tactical combat games such as Medieval Total War might amuse you for a while.

I just gave Civ3 another go after a year and lasted 30 mins. I find it so irritating.

At least it ran properly on my latest PC. A year ago it was unplayable on the old PIII.

Where do you go to find players to set up a freeciv game?

                  Here?

I think if it were to go that route you should play Age of Mythology not Age of Empires 2. For RTS Warcraft 3 is best though IMO.

AoE2 is cheaper and has low sys reqs.

                        WC3 just sucks

                          You don't like WC3?

Traditionally I have despised RTS........but they are getting better. Despite that I couldn't finish AOM SP (one of the best RTS's) without getting too bored.

However with WC3 the SP game was excellent, with varied missions and varied races, as well as a cool story linking them all together. MP is also very well organised.
