  • I was hoping for something long, pedantic and tiresome.
    Life and death is a grave matter;
    all things pass quickly away.
    Each of you must be completely alert;
    never neglectful, never indulgent.

      Well, you gave us one out of the three.

      Just, whatever you do, I beg you, don't write a decade - for example, the nineteen eighties - as the 1980's. It's not a possessive case. It's written as the 1980s. The apostrophe-inserted-into-the-decade-description folly is from the same school of aberration as the Green Grocers' Apostrophe - bean's, potato's, et al.

        It's shameful, really.
        It is. Doctor Trickledown got it pretty right.

        Hey...do you guys have Bisquick in Oz? The wife made a lovely casserole using it last night--quite versatile stuff--great for leftovers.
        Bisquick? What is it? A flavoured powder to which you add water to produce a gravy? If so, we have something called Gravox - a beef-flavoured powder to which you add water to produce gravy. Hideous stuff. Bland and chemical-ridden. What's wrong with some reduced veal or beef stock and, if necessary, some beurre manié?

        • Last night's 5-way game produced something out of the ordinary for our little group! War in the B.C. era!

          Trev, exploring, ventured onto Hydey's land. Hydey offered a peace treaty. Trev declined with the interesting justification that he had no warlike intentions but a peace treaty was restrictive. Hydey promptly went him!

          As last night's session came to a close, Trev announced that he'd found Hydey's capital city and that tonight's session would be very interesting.

          BTW, lads, it has taken us two lengthy sessions to limp to somewhere around 200 BC. It's getting ridiculous. I propose we convert the game into simul mode and anyone fighting a war can revert to turn order.

              • No, it started as turn based and should stay turn based.
                My turns are by far the quickest all game. So wtf?

                  You can't ask for a vote half way through a process. The playing field must remain even throughout the game. Besides, I feel that some of the players are just playing too slowly, especially Horse. Just speed up your turns. Mine are by far the quickest.

                    • I know I'm not the only one thinking that Horses turns take forever and then there was that ridiculous episode when he deliberately held up play and took 30 mins to negotiate a border with two civs...

                        Of course a vote can be asked for halfway through a process. A vote can be asked for at any stage. And simul - as against turn-based - has absolutely no impact on the "playing field". It's a purely administrative matter.

                        Your oppposition to simul is well known. You think it gets in the way in a war situation. Thus I assumed a negative response on your part. But your justification doesn't stand up. Sorry.

                        • I don't enjoy simul. I started a turn based game and wish to continue it as a turn based game. with simul it becomes an uneven field as far as enjoyment is concerned and it does effect gameplay.

                          The problem is we have a few players who are taking way too long with their turns. This problem can be solved by those players, particularly Horse, speeding up their turns. Simul is a cop out solution.

                          I think my game enjoyment is an important factor and I'm the one taking the least time during my turns.

                            • Don't forget there are all those bugs with simul when strange things happen, loss of supported units, builds and extra shields every time you restart.

                              It was also proven a fallacy that it is any quicker BTW.

                              Because all the microing happens during the turn and everyone is moving at once it does slow down the overall transmission of data with some players simply freezing for ages. It's a total pain.

                              A well run turn based game can pretty much keep pace with a simul game. That's why most groups abandoned simul and went back to turns.

                              • I'm not bothered about war though - turn order is fine for that.
