I will probably continue to play mostly CIV II, but I do want to continue to experiment some with III so we can figure out the settings that make the game playable.

i am pretty sure the reason for the lack of crashes was due to removing of the firewall and antivirus....
i have since put an antivirus on, but its a different one and seems to have no software conflicts...... no antivirus yet, but then again i am not dl anything either..
