There's been a vote, just not using my crappy poll.

Slow wasn't quite clear. You need the 2.42 patch to patch your original civ2 to the last SP version used, then also the 2.42 - MGE upgrade patch, which I think can be found at civfanatics.Comment

Shoot, you can get MGE for something like $16 nowadays. I have it installed separately from Civ2 2.42 because the AIs are different. Also, a regular Civ2 save can be shared with anybody, but MGE SP saves can only be read by MGE.(\__/) Save a bunny, eat more Smurf!

asking my US colleagues to buy and send me a copy... It could be very hard for me to show that I'm working

I'm only a few months into this and haven't played enough to have strong preferences, but I voted Deity. Have only played MP with the Ming-RAH axis (sucking, d'accord), so can't really judge the 2x/1x aspect.
I do know that RAH Rules screw me up.
2x1x really changes the game. I can't imagine how bizarre it gets 
when you add 2x movement into the mix...
