To my knowledge, the actual turn is 680 AD, which I originally sent to Crusty

I don't indeed know if he set one, but the password in the other PBEM game was originally set by KenThur. I doubt that this is the same in the actual game...

    • Regret unable to open either of the games I have received - one from Dave & the other from Kengel.

I too will try my luck with a hexeditor some time tomorrow ...

      until then

      • SG1 - here are the results of my research. Removal of my (Egyptian) password changes the bytes at 0x26193 from 48 EF to 40 8F. In another game where I was the blue civ with no password, I tried adding a password of "abcdefg". Starting 0x400 bytes from the end of the file, data changed from 80 72 A9 32 6D 1F 7E D6 30 to 8C 4D 2E 0F E8 C9 AA 87 70.

By the way, I had a good chuckle at:

        • Yeah, Dave, I got almost that far myself - seems that setting an n character psw causes n+2 bytes to change in the -400 region and setting no psw causes only the first byte to change. However, setting psws of differing length does not cause any sane change in this first byte - which (really should be) a size byte of some sort - result - a fairly confused hacker here - but still plugging at it ...

          • Dave - I see that you are on-line - do you have the save with you? if so could you post it on the thread? I don't have a copy here at work ...

            • This file is after my hacking. I changed the bytes at 0x26169 from 84 B7 to 80 72.

              • Cracked!!

Changing the bytes at 264A3 from 4C 0D to 40 6D did the trick - a combination of good detective work followed by trying the even numbers until it worked (third try).

                  • Why are we not playing?

Hm, maybe changing the bytes in the Z044 AE string was a bad call? Looks more like it should be the (n+2)^(1/n) bytes in the EZ 890E sector that need an overhaul?

                    C'mon people, let's get going!

                    Please?

                        • How typical that I didn't bring my laptop to my office today...

Meaning that I won't be able to play until tonight and send it on tomorrow (I have no connection to the Internet in my student residence)...

                          • Something very strange happened to me during my 700 AD turn. I checked a city (via the F1 screen, I think) and noticed it didn't have a temple built (to the left in the city screen). Went to the building list, nope! No temple available to build...

Checked all my other cities and they all displayed the same thing. No temple built (even in cities I knew had one) and it was not available in the building list either. Even checked with the science advicor that I had ceremonial burial...

I closed the F1 screen and went into a city, directly from the map. There it was! A temple! Checked all the other cities, yep the temples were back!

What's going on? Something to do with cracking the password, I suppose? No harm done from what I can tell, but better watch your civs, fellas, and see if the same thing happens to you!

                            • It seems that the effect of a temple was still active as no city displayed unhappiness. It just didn't show in the list over built improvements...
