  • great starts ruined

Last night started a game with Alexander's Horse and Lowang . the last few starts I have had sucked, frozen waistlands or deserts no specials early barbs from huts, you know what it is like.
To start in a nice river valley with gold and buffalo, the river lead to an ocean full of whales and fish, with lots of lush grasland for food, it was a nice change.
Well surprise ,surprise ,surprise, half an hour into the game and Horse says "sorry I have to go", now this is not a crack at Horse , he is such a reliable player and unusual for him to leave early. I have had many good starts but these games never seem to continue, when I start on the pole and barbs kill my second settler the games always seem to go on ,and on.
I am begining to wonder if I should pull the pin if I get crappy start as well but then if we all did that we would never finish a game, would we.

I refuse to listen to anyone complain about starts after what I had the other day!

Actually, you may not like this, but the best way to ensure everyone gets reasonably equal starts but nonetheless still random, do Restless tribes King level. Everyone usually gets a decent start that way, you wont see freaking Archers landing in 3200 BC!

Yeah sorry Hydey - family emergency. I saved it though - so we can play it later.

king level is no fun...... nothing but settlers...... no defense.... any fool can do it.... some better than others..... besides deity is the way to play.... you don't need happy wonders to win but they sure help

and i like barbs..... its the only thing i fear in a game.......

but i will admit the random map generator sux huge..... nice omoeba maps and crap terrain..... too many mountains on small maps and your right one person or another generally gets screwed

however premade maps aren't much better...... you know the terrain you know the procedure.... i believe its huts that make or break your game.....

you get barbs your in trouble.... you get gold spit out that settler, tech to monarchy your laughing , tech not on the path to monarchy your hurting.... nomad tribe four legs two legs 100g two settlers

aaaaaw Hydey calls himself "I must suck in games" in tonights game.

I must admit tho, you do seem to be stuck on a small, thin island in this game. You are the Japanese tho

Well...I usually play the Sioux and get stuck on a friggin' island more times than not...one of the reasons I haven't played much...didn't like getting "challenged" when I was still trying to learn the ropes. It is very discouraging...especially when you don't figure out how small your "nation" is until an hour or two into MP.

Keep an eye on demographics and foreign relations screen to get a decent idea on how you're faring early on in the game......

I don't need the demo screens...its pretty obvious how crappy I'm doing when I've got a bunch of Cro Mags running around on a rocky little guano pile while silken dressed Captains wave from their passing galleons...

                        Boo Hoo Hydey!

All this sooking about starts could make you believe that only certain people get bad starts.

I tend to find a well timed military operation can compensate for even the most horrendous start. That's why I don't worry if If I'm coming last. That can be quickly rectified later in the game.

If I'm really doing badly sometimes I think of my civ as the barb civ and behave accordingly. There is a lot of fun to be had sinking ships, stealing techs, launching raids and generally being a nuisance.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

I don't think I know what a good start is.

Wait...once, when playing Berz and Rah, my settler was standing in the Promised Land already. I built on my first move and soon a fabulous city arose, milking whales, gold and some other stuff for all it was worth.
I let them duke it out and grabbed wonders....but then Berz started snatching all my discoveries....and because of my poor play, I soon became hopelessly behind in the warfare development department.

                              So...I guess they are possible.
