  • Civ 3 blow to massively multiplayer games!

Firaxis has decided to impose a 7 civilization per game limit in Civ 3. This is a severe blow to the idea of massively multiplayer games. If we complain enough, though, they might still change it.

The apologetic justification some SP players gave it is that more than 7 civs would "burden the AI". This is IMO bull***t - the computing technology has advanced a lot since Civ 1 (which also had 7 civs) was released... Anyway, multiplayer mode doesn't require much AI, so it's a pathetic excuse.

Go forth, children, and make your displeasure known at the Civ 3 General/Suggestions forum, as I have already done!

they should at least make it 8 civs
so that we could do 4 on 4 tribe matches if we wanted to.

Even the Single players should like lots of civs, especially for scenarios. I love having lots of players even if they are AI. Different enemies to deal with, different alliances and whatnot. I know that in the European Diplo game i would have loved to have more players, that Europe map is waay too massive to just have 7 players. Empires were too big, and it took too much time up just filling in the space. But in single player something like that with 10 different civs would be great. You could have Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, Turkey, Austria, Spain, and Sweden for example, and could have a grand ol' time. Or all sorts of other benifits for Scenario builders. Rather than having a 'neutrals' that takes up half the map they could all be real counties, and it could make scenarios much better.

Time us multiplayers speak up. MORE CIVS!!

Even eight or nine civs, I wish they'd push it just a bit. Nothing too drastic

Oh yeah, don't even speak about the scenarios I try to make where the neutrals end up being more powerful than anybody else as I didn't have enough free civ slots to split the neutrals up ...

get serious..7 is more than enough for multiplayer. Can you imagine playing a 10 player game?A 15?You'd have a heck of time getting a session together and I can hear the whining now.

It would be nice to have more slots if there is to be any scenario creation capabilities but other than that...
The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

Ditto Smash and Hydey. Between software and modem drop outs and organising sessions with everyone involved, any more than 7 would be a nightmare. There are more important elements to argue for in the new version than the number of civs.

Hydey - it looks like you have the letter "L" after "prot" in your sig. I think it's meant to be the number "1".

7 is more than enough. How hard is it to get even 6 or more players to regularly continue a game, not to mention the time for an entire turn to take.
Maybe some would like more as an option, but not me.
