  • new ALL-NIGHT game

I remember about a year ago a successful all-night Civ game with me, Berzerker, Markus, Empress, and somebody else whom I've forgotten. Anyway, I'd like to resurrect this idea for this Friday. The game would start at 9 Eastern and run until morning, say, 6 AM. Hopefully we could get the game finished playing in simultaneous mode. If we didn't, we'd continue at another mutually agreeable time. To speed the game along, we would not reload under any circumstances. If you drop you'll have to let the AI take over for a turn and then rejoin, as simul mode usually requires.

I'm looking for 6 more players for this game, so post here or ICQ me if you're interested. This would not be a diplomacy game: just a large game. The only house rule is no city bribe. I'd like to play on the Europe Modpack, as it contains a lot of useful changes to the rules.txt that I think are really essential to a quality multiplayer game (e.g., Oracle does not expire, all non-expiring happy wonders require more shields to make them less attractive, howitzers' power are reduced, etc. - I've really tried to make all the changes to the rules.txt that people seem to have found necessary with long experience).

You can download the main game files at www.bestofmetal.net/EUROPE1.zip . If you want to grab special sounds too, they're at www.bestofmetal.net/EUROPESOUNDS.zip . There's a readme in the pack detailing all the rules.txt changes. To install, create a directory called "EUROPE" inside your "SCENARIO" directory and dump the files in there (verify exact spelling of those directories).

The game settings on the game file are Emperor, no barbs, no huts. We would of course be playing 1x1x.

        I'll bite... probably.
Would REALLY like to have an all-skill game = no wonders & no huts.

So the same old tired, boring strategy doesn't shortened by 1 player (or a pair) going for nothing but as many empty cities as possible, get Monarchy, the Trade, build Gardens, build somemore empty cities, go for Mono while building a fleet of caravans, move them next to a "wonder city", rush-build Mich's, Bach's, Leo's,... ad nauseum. Samo, samo, same old formula game after game = NOT Civilization to me.
(figured I'd expose the "grand" winning strategy for any rookies that may try to win against it.

But i'd love to pound away all nite in a real Civ contest!

Yeah, I'm not sure it's worth doing that! You need to get an unlimited service.

BTW, you can get a service that takes messages for you while you're online. We use Pagoo: www.pagoo.com . Not sure if they operate outside the US tho'.

Well, there are no huts. However, there are wonders. But I think I've changed the rules enough so that the typical strategy won't work. I've added 100 shields to Oracle, Mikes, and Bachs, so anyone who builds any of these is going to pay a hefty price. You're probably better off going for Copernicus and Newton's. Also, I'm postponing the technologies of Republic and Democracy, so the rush to those governments is somewhat delayed. I've also reduced the cost of wonders like Lighthouse, Magellans, Great Wall, and UN that are underused in many-player games - especially since this map is mostly continental, Lighthouse & Magellans have particularly had their build costs slashed.

Now this is beginning to sound interesting, with those kind of wonder mods... & being a non-manipulator / dummy, it would seem those kind of mod's can be used to cheat anyone, anyway.

Combi... mite also suggest the improvement T of T Extended game did = have Oracale last longer, so becomes worthwhile to build it. This give all the more reason to at least build temples in your cities + it gives another happiness source if U R playing at the deity level... which i hope is the setting (so all have to stay honest & get 2 settlers to start!).

Feel free to play on the mod as much as you like, try it out for yourself. We're using it in the New Millennium Eurodiplomacy game to great acclaim.

Good suggestion - that's one of the modifications I made! Oracle does not expire.

                              bump

We need more players! We can't play with just three. If we don't get at least two more, we'll have to call it off for tonight and maybe try again next weekend.

If y'all prefer, we can play with the modified rules.txt (and graphics) but use an unknown map. I'm flexible.
