  • The First Diplogame on a Gigamap may be the last!

Something astonishing has occured, we have ran out of cities! We therefore need a solution before next Wednesday, which is our next session or the entire game can be compramised.

    Someone help!

Hehehehe, see, i told you a giga dip would never work. There is too much land!

We warned you about the city limit, hehehe, i think it is damn funny personally.

But the solution is to incorporate this difficulty into the game. Now in order to win you will damn sure have to conquer others. Try destroying their cities and building some to replace it for yourself.

And you'll just have to do what you can with the cities you have i suppose.

    hehehehe, suckers.

If you want to make things interesting in the NEXT diplo gigamap game, you can set city limits for each civ...say, each player is allowed to 36-37 cities, MAX. That would place more emphasis on smart growth

As for your current game, there are three choices, if you continue: alliances leading to speeded space race without expansion, an across-the-board program of city disbanding (with multiple bought-settlers), or a war of agression.

The city limit is hard coded, though.

Yeah, I knew this was going to happen and I'm guessing with the 255 cities, we have only colonized 35% of the world area TOPS. To my knowledge, there are only a few cities in China, none in Indochina, none in Indonesia, none in Australia or Greenland and northern asia. This said, I don't think the game loses any interest. It just creates a challenge entirely new to the players in the game. I wouldn't think of quitting this game depite the limitations. There are some huge discrepancies in city allocation that do pose problems though- for example- The Egyptians, who exploded early on with city growth, now have 65, 70 something of the cities! My Mongols, and our allies the Indians, don't have this amount combined! Which definetly causes some grumbling. A great war may be the only solution to bring balance to the world, but we will have to see.

To fill this map I think we'd need about 1000 cities.
Oh well, it's too late to turn back now. I hope there is something that can be done to remedy this problem, otherwise we'll just have to get creative.

        Khanman:

</font>The city limit is hard coded, though.
        <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>

You mean in the .exe? Could it be decomplied, adjusted and recompiled? Is this possible? Is it legal? Has it been tried? Do you think it would make the game crash?

Oh BTW Ozzy....no one likes a "I told you so" type of guy (even if you are right )

Such is the reasoning behind my Trade Pact idea, in which we focus on infrastructure, and technology that would help us improve it.

No new land is needed, its kind of cool if you think about it, it creates a no mans land outside of the Urban areas, and if there is a Great War...

          Europe is prepared, be warned!

Are you suggesting having "actual battlefields"? I like this idea to a point, but my empire was in the process of creating pockets of urban areas when the limit was reached. Therefore, I have no true "urban areas". My Empire spans the entire continent of Asia practically and you know how big it is. I am up for a challenge though.......my infastructure and trade routes are maturing quite well.....

One solution might be way more ocean, which would make exploration really important, but then that would require a premade map.

I meant in global terms, my nation is one giant urban pocket.

When I said that I meant that the world would be a collection of secluded urban pockets (at best whole nations, at its lowest single cities) surrounded by huge untamed wilds.

Its an interesting world to say the least, war should be much more strategic in this game.

I think it will be fun. This will be a refreshing change from going down the same old road. I am looking forward to seeing what will happen next......

To hell with conformity- this is still the best game going on.........

Could someone send me a savegame for this? I would love to make a map of this diplogame. I always wondered what would happen if the city limit was reached on a map this size. On this scale civs would truly be regional powers, not world powers. Better start negotiating guys!

This could prove to be an interesting diplogame...

                      P.S

Seeing as cities are a scare resource why not start trading in them? If you pay another player to disband his 1-2 size city you could settle somewhere else.

Btw, you guys are playing with extended naval movement i hope?

There is no extended naval movement, which is something we failed to add into our game. Heh, not cool...

As far as cities go, it will be interesting, undoubtedly those with the most cities (European Union and Egypt at this point) are at an advantage because their growth plateau will be much higher than that of other nations.

Consequently, they can dictate their own expansion by keeping a number of their cities low and waiting for the proper time to disband them, I have already successfully accomplished this feat on one occasion.

As for the save game, well, I know I have a password on my save, and I assume/hope others have taken the same route to protect their interests, in that you would have to go through each civ because the cheat option would not be available.

Cities being traded as commodities? That's an interesting take on things. Never dealt with anything like that before.

So who says all land must be covered by cities? Actually, I think it could be educational with all civs reaching the city max equally and having to go on from there.

I mean that maybe this is the perfect example for all and any strategies to be tested, all civs being otherwise equal in number of cities.

Couldn't you just change the rules.txt at this point? Sure, people who already have a large navy will get the most benefit but that advantage will erode quickly once others start building up their fleet. You might also take a look at the road movement factor but my preference would be increasing the naval movement of all vessels by 2-3.

What civs hold the most cities, are there two big ones 50-70? And 5 smaller ones 20-30? In that case building up a powerblock would be my suggestion. Otherwise I would suggest that the big players give up some cities 5-15 cities in return for a lump sum of all the other smaller players.

As for savegames, well...unfortunately there are ways to get past that. If your interested in a neutral map showing only the shape of the continents I can make one, no problem.
