For playing over the net, you will need the newest civ2 multiplayer patch version 1.3 (for PC, there should be another one for MACs). You can get the PC version for free directly from Microprose http://support.microprose.com/civii.htm
If you don't use this patch, you won't be able to connect to other players who installed it (and most did!)

To get into a game, use the famous ICQ messaging program at http://www.icq.com . It is easy to use and install. Just add players to your adress list and contact them when you see them online.
Look here for an ICQ list of Apolyton players: http://apolyton.net/forums/Forum2/HTML/000507.html

The times in the Apolyton forum are given in EDT (Eastern Daylight Time). To get familiar with the world time zones, have a look here: http://www.timeanddate.com/time

Mr_Neutron - You need the CivII Gold MPE disk to play MP games. The patch only upgrades *that* to correct some bugs.

            Kengel, great thread!

This is a good candidate for a sticky or for the Great Library.

Great Thread...It needs to be advertised more. A couple of questions. First, I have basic original CIV2 (no Test of Time or Gold Edition), is that a problem with multi-player? I've downloaded the multi-player patch update, will that do it for me? Also, where is the best place to start or join a game? Thanks.

Sometimes, connecting to a host seems not to work. A possible reason is, that civ2 of the host is telling a wrong IP adress. If so, the host can find out his/her IP number with one of the following links:
                    http://kid.pagecount.com/kid/tellip

                    http://www.simflex.com/ip.htm
Alternatively, you can try out the program winipcfg.exe in your windows directory.

I can't provide a link, but I thought I'd mention a problem I've had a couple times in resuming MP games:

If the host is loading a saved game from some directory other than his install directory, you must have an identically named directory on your machine or the game will not run. For example, if the host loads his save game from a subdirectory named Game117, you cannot join the game until you have a subdirectory named Game117 (or the host moves the save game to his install directory).

Too true. Always best to leave the game save in its original directory.

Look at the 'zone' if you want to get fast into a game. But beware, most of those player like to quit games before they end. But a good place to get some practice http://zone.msn.com/civ2multiplayer/

Can I use the normal Civ2 (not gold edition) to play IP games? I can't on the Zone, but do you know of anywhere else?
