The 1.3 patch is the most recent.

Yes, its better that way, people hate taking over for an AI civ, especially late in the game.

also, what's wrong with large maps? leaves more room for establishing zones of control

Have you installed the patch?

Don't care too much about the settings except I don't play double movement. And I like to start from the very beginning, no accelerated start-up.
