  • Airbases!

This issue came up in the Raging Dragon PBEM, and I was wondering if we could get a consensus on what are and aren't appropriate uses of airbases. Personally I think that it should be against the rules to build airbases instead of railroads just because that's quicker, and same with building 8 airbases around a city to make it impossible to attack by air. I'm guessing nobody thinks those two things are ok, but what about building airbases on hills and mountains in order to get the food bonus?

    The poll is multiple choice.
    46
Using 8 of them to shield a city against air attack
    34.78%
    16
Using strings of them as cheap railroads
    28.26%
    13
Building them on hills and mountains for the food bonus
    19.57%
    9
    Using them to transport bananas
    17.39%
    8

IMO, airbases should only be used as airbases, not as production modifiers

As said on AIM, unrealistic or not it's fair since every player can use them.

Btw, does anyone know why the creators made it so that they'd yield food bonuses? I thought it was since planes could transport food to regions that would otherwise not have any, but if anyone knows why let's hear it.

I voted option 1 and 2. But my opinion is unfounded. I have not played any PBEMs where I can build airbases. It just seems to me to be a missuse of the original intent of their function; providing a place for aircraft to land. The food bonus does not seem like it could produce magnified results so I'd say don't worry about it.

Bananas should not be transported by air. They taste much better when sent by ship, so I don't think that anyone should suffer their populus to eat airborne bananas. Only monkeys have the right to do something like that, but thus far I have not seen any scenarios that have monkey civilizations with even the potential to at some point in the future build airports, thus that can be safely ignored.

Solution? Create a scenario with airplane flying monkeys. Only then can this banana transportation by means of airports be properly solved.

          Thank you for your time.

            I voted A, B and C options.
Let´s keep its original purpose: providing a place for aircraft to land
            That´s all

I dont think the food bonus was intended by the designers. I voted for all three.

I think that the food bonus is a bug, and it was corrected in TOT if I recall it correctly.

I sinceresly think that all these uses are cheat, but this is only my opinion.

How in hell is supposed an empty airbase to prevent an air attack? Only because in Civ2 you can't stop to enter in airbase: you can't fly over an airbase. I sinceresly thing that the string of airbases both for protection and railroads is cheat.

And of course, the other thing is a bug that we shall not take adventage from...

However, I love to eat bananas, so I've also voted for the four option

I once read somewhere that airbases shouldn't be allowed to be build within the city radius.

                    I couldn't agree more.

I think Germanos' idea is the best and simplest for a house rule. I would add that airbases should not be built next to each other.
