there are times when you can get an individual city or the odd year cities to celebrate with more than 50% lux....it all depends on whats in the cities, trade routes and distance from capital.

Yeah, but I hate to micromanage to that level. Besides is it worth celebrating that one city one more turn against what you lose across your entire empire with that 10% not going to science or taxes?

well often you have other cities which are smaller that won't celebrate and all the sudden will......

but your right, if its one or two cities i won't do it..but if 5+ cities will benefit, i will forgo the science for those turns that are needed

            80% luxuries. 100% on democracy.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

I have in my last couple of games experimented with max luxuries ( ie 80%) with 20% tax for about 5 turns, then lower as far as possible, for a lengthy period of time after that.

But this has involved synchronising city growth and improvements in about 2/3 of my cities so that at commencement all the cities have temples and generally at size 3 and also with a minumum of 4 but preferably more roaded and irrigated squares. The result is rapid rise to size 6 or 7 in all celebrating cities. The checking of attitude in all cities after every turn and placement of workers only on roaded, river or ocean squares is also necessary to justify this high luxury rate.

The luxury rate is then reduced to usually 50% initially as any less cause disorder, and after rushbuying of marketplaces and Oracle ( see other thread on Oracle) and trade routes this can be reduced over time to 20% until I am ready for the next surge.

The next surge will be after the building of aqueducts and will see most cities to size 12 including a number that did not celebrate the first time.

Where games develop in such a way that city growth and development cannot be as well coordinated then I will run a much lower luxury rate of maybe 30% over extended period of time and have sporadic growth celebrations only in 1 or 2 cities at a time.

My initial celebration is usually done very early before I have built marketplaces and before I have trade routes, so the luxury rate of 80%is necessary for cities to go to size 7, later after these are built such high rates are not necessary

using 40% lux in despot is not uncommon for rapid expanders whom are screwed on the path to a better govt.

i have had to do this numerous times...its the only way to be productive and keep expanding

For starting I'd say 10t 40s 50l is most common for me.

Hmm, never tried that. I usually just rush build the temples.

I try to save gold up for when you reach that city limit. It's usually not a problem. You just have to restrain yourself from rushbuilding as much. It's a trade off. But I will admit that if you haven't researched trade or have much trade it's harder, but not undoable.

I like to have at least 400 gold stored up when I get to city 12. And a few caravans to divert from wonder building if I need the extra cash.
