Trying to bring this back on topic ...
I just found out something else I didn't know (apparently there is still more about this game I didn't know then what I do)
I had previously thought that any time you moved a trireme away from the shoreline that there was a chance you would lose it (too far from shore). I only just realized that you can move it away from shore, it just has to move back to shore before the end of the turn (I guess so it doesn't spend that 50 years between turns floating in the ocean )
Again, I should have known about this long ago , and can't guess how many times I have had my triremes hug the coast needlessly. On a map with many islands it makes early exploration very difficult (or very chancy, if you want to risk your triremes).

Yes, that is reading the rules carelessly, but we all have a story like that. There is a way to keep them from sinking using the end turn command on the tool line, but it's considered a cheat. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. I wouldn't rule out finding out some long established player has always cheated. That would be quite a find though.Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..
Look, I just don't anymore, okay?
