I downloaded a pile of scenarios from csc.apolyton.net but when I try to run them it says the game can't run the scenario because it's not a save game file. What does it actually mean and how can I make the scenarios work?

It probably means the game you're running is older than the game the scenario was written for. You can find out your software level by looking at the title of the "Game Options" window. Microprose released several versions of Civ; each adds features which makes it incompatible with earlier versions. Most scenarios are written for the Fanstastic Worlds or Multiplayer editions.

My appologies if you have done these two steps, but...
Have you unzipped the files? Most scenarios are saved in condensed form and need to be opened before they are installed.
In the Civ menu when you start a game are you clicking on the box to [Load a Game] or [Begin a Scenario]? You need to "begin scenario" for the game to look for .scn files.Be the bid!

Yes, I have unzipped each of the scenario files to their own folders. I think the answer is my version of civ, which is the original version I bought about two years ago. Hmm. No wonder they don't work. Are the newer versions commercial or available on the net, for example this Fantasy Worlds version. Forgive me if my knowledge is out of date, but I really haven't followed the civ scene after purchasing the game...

I'm not sure if there is just a patch for Civ2 FW, but I don't think so. Here is the Microprose/Hasbro link where you can buy the FW version. Not sure if they ship to Suomi...but you might be able to find it cheaper in a software store since it is getting old. (but still great!)
