  • Newbie to CivII

I know this probably is dumb in the extreme, but I'm willing to risk it.

    I'm not new to the concept of Civ; I have SMAC and Smacx, as well as playing the original Civ on SNES (which I enjoyed). I recently got a copy of CivII original and upgraded it with Cedric Greene's patch to CivII MGE, and brought TOT some time ago, just never got around to playing it. What I would like to know is;

    1) Is there a place where I can learn the basics and find some MP players willing to teach a newbie through game playing? I know the Apolyton Civ II MP forums, but from reading those, I don't want to get flamed if I ask. Sheeze. Some of those guys are a little unhelpful

    2) Looking at CivFantics site, I'm overwhelmed by all of the scenarios, modpacks and whatnot. Any help/ideas here what would be essential to play/learn from?

    TIA

What kind of basics do you want to learn?
    MP or SP?

If those guys doesn't co-operate with you; ask here or
    you can always ask me.

    Scenarios can also be found here at Ape;
you can find them behind the Civ II link on the main page.
Any help/ideas here what would be essential to play/learn from?
Do you want to know what scenarios are good or
those that can be used as tutorials?

A good general source of information can be found here:

The Civ Strategy section is also a good place to ask your questions.

As far as MP goes, I would say you should give the MP forums a chance. While most of us are truely hard core players, I've always seen newbees questions answered. We are always looking for people to play with, so we try not to chase people away

        Rasbelin:

Is the MP different than the SP? I'm not asking about player cunning, I'm used to mp SMAC/SMACX, I'm just asking if there is a difference between the SP and MP modes.

I would like to know what scenarios you have found good and instructive.

From what I've seen so far in this game, there isn't much difference between CivII and SMAC/X.

        Thanks for your response!

Thanks for the info, Ming. Cool Avatar. . I'll give the MP forum a shot, and keep the fire extingusher handy.

The game is pretty much the same. The rules remain the same.
However, it is entirely different playing a human vs the stupid AI.

Since everybody is trying to get the same good wonders, and you can count on the fact that battle plans will be much smarter, it's so unlike sp. It's a whole new and far more interesting game.

At least irritating the co-players with the Chat with Kings
              window is sometimes entertaining.
But you're right, Ming, MP is veeerrry inspiring and fun.

I've found the MP in smac/smacx to be extremely interesting. Looks like CivII was the base for the smac/x game mp. Cool. Doesn't look like too many differences here. Just have to get used to the different names and roles, etc.

                  Okay, I list my recommendations:

The WWII scenarios bundled with the standard Civ II
is playable, but there's many bad matters too.

                  Conflicts in Civilization expansion CD:

World War I (I'm currently playing it on the background )
                  Gulf War
                  Crusades
Eastwind (=the WWII in the Pacific)

                  Dowloaded from Ape's collection:

                  1884
                  Imperialism 1904

There's many more good ones, but I listed
                  those I could remember now.

Now, I'll have to continue the game...
