Just wondering -- how many of you use the HiRes patch file (you can download it from the database)?

I've had it for a month and it's a great improvement to the whole game.

Never heard of it....whats it supposed to do (besides the obvious)?

      Creator's description:
"In addition to replacing some of the sounds, I have created all new unit graphics (plus added some alternatives), most of the terrain graphics, all of the city improvements, and many of the icons (the ones that annoyed me most). For almost all of my graphics I used historically-correct photo-accurate images painstakingly scaled down and customized. NEW SPECIAL EFFECTS: I am not the first to replace the "kicking up dust" animation (indicating battle) with a fiery explosion. I hope you will agree that what a fireball lacks in appropriateness during ancient combat, it makes up for in fun."

Tim's (MindsEye) HiRes graphics are truly spectacular - unfortunately they come pre-wrapped with a modified rules.txt file - for comparison and competition this doesn't work, so very reluctantly we stick (mainly) with the originals.

            Go to: apolyton.net/civ2/
then go to the DOWNLOADS - database section and press the Patches categorie. You'll find it there.

I think I may try that HiRes pack. Does everone else think it's worth it?

I can always reinstall my regular civ2 afterwards if I don't like it right?

Also, Is there something I can download that will allow me to play multiplayer games?

                  Thanks,
                  Ben

BEG, Multiplayer is a different game, all the same rules. Called MGE (for Multiplayer Gold Edition), it is still available from some retaillers.

[Note: some hacks are mentioned in the thread "CivII Multiplayer" from 10 days ago. I know absolutely zero about their efficacy, but check the thread if it's a big deal to you. I recommend buying MGE if you want to get into multiplaying, as that is what potential opponents will have.]

                      Thanks Blaup,

Do you know if MGE takes up much additional memory? I recently bought civ2 call to power but I can't play it because it requires that I download 300MB of info to my compo. The original civ2 only requires 30-40 MB of space. If MGE requires less than that I'll be alright and I'll run out and buy it.

                        HiRes is great!

I use the new HiRes graphics, but I did not install the whole modpack. You can choose to just use the graphics upgrade without changing the game itself. This means that you won't get all the new sounds, etc for some of the new units, but I still think it's worth doing. I much prefer the HiRes graphics over the originals. I think it makes the game more enjoyable to play.

Most posters seem to like it, I don't. The graphics are too realistic for the feel of the game. The images are too cluttered for my taste. I prefer the standard style - a bit cartoonish, in a fun way. It's a game, it ought to look like one.
