  • Does a city ALWAYS have to build something?

YANQ - Yet Another Newbie Question

Is there a way to force a city to NOT build anything. Sometimes I'd like my cities to just accrue resources and not build units or buildings. The side benefit is that I don't have 20 cities annoying me with "... has already been built" messages.

I saw something about "Auto Build", but I forgot to look up what/how it works.

Let's see if I can beat the Marquis this time --

The quick answer is YES - but in the early game if you want to accumulate resource you can build a barracks and then sell it - giving you 40 gold for 40 shields - in the middle game if in doubt build a caravan and then build some more - in the very late game you can indeed 'build' capitalisation - which gives gold instead of shields ...

I've noticed there's a line for "Nothing" in the rules.txt, right above the Palace... any explanations about this one?

No - nothing is simply not an option ...

I'm surprised at you, SG! Of course a city can build nothing, but you must discover Capitalization. Then you can set the city to build nothing, and instead, it just generates money for your treasury.

look into the rules.txt... there's a line for Notrhing there, although I've never been able to build that... and then, there's a nothing option in Colonization...

You can build nothing, sort of

When you finish building something just ignore the "zoom to city" option and the next turn ignore the message "you have allready built so and so" it will keep adding shields/resources but will never build an item until you change it.

This ofcourse doesnt work with units, obviously

The (nothing)-line is most probably a crash protection.
Suppose you were making a scenario where you had to
gain techs even before building settlers and warriors.
Go into city menu, click build and see game crash and burn.
                    Maybe.
So, you need a nil pointer in the build list.
Before capitalization, it's not possible to build nothing.
Even keeping on building a temple will accumulate shields
in the city, ready to be spent or wasted when you make a
shift. Look upon it building a large structure, but where
you haven't quite decided what to use it for.

Early in the game I build barracks and diplos when there is nothing I really want to build. I build barracks if I need money, and I just sell them when I build them, or I build diplos and use them to help build wonders by disbanding them. But usually, I'm just trying to crank out more settlers

Well, SG, you beat me to it! I haven't been online for a few days, just to give you the opportunity...

Anyway, Godot, the basic message is NO, you can't build nothing before capitalization, and there is no reason to do so, anyway.

I suspect Catullus is right in guessing that the nothing in the rules.txt prevents a crash - it gives the game something for default to prevent any division by zero type errors. Or something like that...

I agree you can't build nothing. Difficult to think why you'd want to.

But if you are desperate for some reason to have the shields a city produces go to waste then (bitter) experience has taught me one or two methods to achieve that end.

Set the city to build a wonder, make sure some other civ is kind enough to complete it first, then let your poor city's shields accumulate precisely as long as you like - carefully not changing production to something which is not another wonder or a space ship part until the number of shields it costs to do so is horrendous.

Or how about building a unit and then moving all the workers onto ocean squares. If you want to duplicate my methods exactly, time your suicide unit's production to be complete just as your city is going to deliver a caravan. Then just press the enter button to complete your turn and watch the unit flicker fleetingly into - and then out of - existence. OK you didn't exactly build nothing - but it was a something that turned out pretty ephemeral.

Now, you may cheer at this point, your mysterious ends having been splendidly served. But if you are a traditionalist you resist the temptation to do so. Instead you will ritually shout "idiot" loudly and then **** and then some other things which I will not repeat.

Sadly, I could go on but my heart is not in it.

Wrong. In this case, the window to choose what to build doesn't appear at all and Settlers are auto-production...
