If you are NOT interested in MP then I would say forget it.Stick with original civ2.If you like scenarios then try to find a copy of Fantastic Worlds add-on.The ai in MGE is really screwed up diplomacy wise.Worshipful>Hostile in 1 or 2 turns.Regardless of what you do.Its ok if you are a total warmonger.Ruins some scenarios also.

It has all the features plus some bugs(there are patches)

MP is/can be a blast.Much better than the ai.BUT,it also can be frustrating trying to continue or finish games.

I WOULD recommend it,BUT only for the MP aspect.

Good idea it has everything that Civ 2 has with all the add ons and unlike TOT the scenario tools are all there, but it has made the game harder so be warned.

Gold was set up for multiplayer games- reason the ai's so harsh is cuz the game was set up for multiplayer! If you want to play the good old reliable, predictable ai opponent, stick to the regular version for sure.

You may not have any interest in MP now, but eventually you will get bored kicking the snot out of the stupid AI.

Get the MP version, or you may regret your decision later
            Keep on Civin'

Thanx guys, so Civ2-Gold Ed. is the same as Civ2 Original but just with MP and harder right? That's good I wanna be challenged. But, how did they make the AI so tough? Do they cheat all the time?

I thought the AI seemed more hostile in MPGE. I'm switching back to the original Civ2.

I don't think it is harder at all.The ai simply is just not competitive once you get a feel for things. And it certainly does not know how to wage war effectively.

Its a hostility bug.Causes the ai to reset it's attitude every turn.Makes alliances more or less impossible.Even peace is hard to maintain. Its funny to see an ai civ with crusaders get enraged and sneak attack your alpines. But its not very challenging.

The ai cheats at higher levels no matter what version you have.It was the only thing available to makers at the time.

MGE also comes with Fantastic Worlds add-on and Conflicts in Civilization. This is for scenarios but the MGE hostile ai ruins many scenarios so they can't be played as the creator intended.

IMO-it is a major bug that needs to be fixed but the manufacturer has no interest in doing this. They refuse to acknowledge there is even a difference.

                  Buy GOLD for MP only.

there's another difference between MGE and Civ2+FW
Civ2+FW use the "3 pts objectives Cities"
MGE have this otpion too, but it don't works !
i don't know why microprose don't have made a patch for this bug.

MGE is full of bugs anyway... for example the diplo bug, AI civs behave way more aggressive towards you

the purple bugis fixed in MGE however

                          the purple bug??

i dont think that ai hostility in MGE is a bug - theyre like that in tot. which is why im regretfully switching back to the original civ2 for SP games. the ai is so hostile in tot its a joke, there attitude towards you 'degrades' by one step every turn, at least. makes a peaceful game impossible. makes OCC a lot harder too.

When I sent a e-mail to microprose after I bought MGE/UCC they told me that the game was modified that way so the ai players would still be involved in multiplayer games. Rather than just make pease with everyone. The only thing it does anyway is reset attidues at the end of every turn, not a changle realy as it is still as stupid about as is always was.
