FreeeCiv like units?

Having dabbled a bit in freeciv, is there a mod for Civ2 that will create units with the appropriate flags for their nations the same way that freeciv does? Having an American unit with a purple flag rather than a brown flag is not as helpful as an American unit with an American flag.

If not how hard would it be to display different unit bmp files per player in a scenario.

BTW, I think the unit background is hardcoded as a uniform color, so it cannot be changed.
