When it comes to the Civ series, Civ2 is only one slipper. SMAC is the other and they make an excellent pair

No you wouldn't have done, my units.gif is a bastardization of some of the better units (IMHO) I found trawling the different sites (mostly Alex Mohr's). I also did some minor editing (the Chariot, Crusader and the parashute bits of the paratrooper)

      Anyway here you go:

Thanks a bazillion! My lousy, ancient (Win3.1) gif editor insists on 255 in the palette being white, and swaps xparent2 (255) and white (31) to accomplish that. Makes saving it a problem and in-game results a crap-shoot. What moron programmed such a thing?

I tried Gimp/GtK but was unable to configure it to the point that it would load successfully.

I'm a little puzzled by your choice for Stealth Fighter. It looks like something from the '50s: the aged Canberra fighter/bomber, or an even more primative French jet. (The Ouragon, if I recall how to spell it—why didn't the Frogs give it a nice English name?)

I just love that kind of retro look al la F-86 Sabre and that graphic of the ME-262 was as close as I could get.

In fact I toyed with the idea of using a bi or Tri-plane graphic for the fighter.

Anyway, I never got round to completing my preffered Units.gif, so it is a bit of a mish mash.

Oh and I never found a graphic for the elephant that I liked...

                Hmmmmmm

Not to look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth, but I've got a few problems with the unit set. Some of them have ID shields positioned such that the damage bar is obscured. Here are the examples, blown up for easy visibility.

The Caravan, Fighter, and Bomber are the worst offenders (and Dip, but damage doesn't matter). Plus I rounded out the picture with the Spy, which has the shield so far away it can be a bit confusing.

It may be that you've confused the shield-positioning dots, which are on the left and top of the frame. (See fig. 2 below)

PS, I'm looking for a good heffalump...

hmmm...yes what with all the cut'n'past'n'editing I was doing I had a rather cavalier attitude toward the shield position...sign of a poor workman not finishing the job properly

..then again it doesn't take long to adjust

..thanks for the Elephas maximus btw.

...and all I need to do now is re-install WinG back on my NT laptop and I'm back into action.

The inset is blown up double scale (2x2 pixels per "dot") because it came from a 640x480 VGA game. It may be a tad big for Civ2 graphics unless you want to think of Heffalumps as Tolkienesque variants.

The snapshot from the editor shows the how and why of shading (which I find particularly effective in the original resolution, less so in the pixel-doubled image) if you wish to tweak the image.

Looking forward to seeing it (and adjusted ID shields) when you get the time. I may feel inspired to do some tweaking the heffalump myself, in which case you'll see it here.

waits until out of earshot before making noises that would only be mocked by the Git...

All the best canals were constructed by shovels with Irish accents (is "navvy" a word known in the States?) not bulldozers - you need to change the Foley effect, Stray

Maybe the little rinky-dink canals to be found in England and upstate New York, useful only for diminutive barges towed by mules…
To build the "Big Ditch" took bulldozers and power shovels.

Navvies, hah! Ah pity the fools!
