You could say "Eeek!" when I would stand upon your feet ...

This a very big game and there is much to learn.Fortunately,it is readily available here and at other civ sites. The Great Library has pretty much everything you need to know.

        Accelerating the learning curve:
OCC(One City Challenge)-you can learn more about the game mechanics than any other way with this.

Check out Paul's strategy guide if you havn't allready

Mutliplay-if possible.Allying with someone like Xin Yu will teach a ton real fast. Most of what makes people good MPers, makes them good civers in general. And vice-versa.
The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

Are you trying to threat me? Perhaps I should get a bodyguard, but actually I have these nice Celtic honor guards, so they'll be enough.

Well wrtitten, Smash! I agree with you. And if some of the junior Apolytoners feel bad thanks to me, I want to make sure that they don't have to feel as they now perhaps do. Sorry, lads!

No threat - just a joke.

I'm Sethos the Fat - and I need 4 dray-horses to carry my holy body

And "junior" Apolytoner? - I'm only 4 years younger than SG[1] - now guess ...

In this case I meant Apolytoners that aren't so experienced (i.e. those with Settler and Chieftain status). But calling you junior isn't perhaps correct (checked your profile).

Welcome, arenor! I've been where you are pretty recently, and you've definitely come to the right place.

For me, the key to my first deity win was within this forum. I read greatly of the Great Library (esp. the Paulicy). This alone can get you over the hump. But I also got a lot of help just by posting Stupid Questions on this thread (and on the Civ2 Strategy thread).

The Big Ideas that I gained the most from were -- Camels Rule (for trade and WoWs), the Critical Importance of Happiness , and how to use different govts to best advantage -- representative govts for explosive city growth through Celebration, totalitarian govts for blitzkrieg war machines. Etc.

At this point, I can (usually) win at Deity, but am still learning the MANY different strategies that can work.

I also recommend joining in on a succession game in this thread. You get to see a lot of different playing styles at work, and the threaded commentary on each successive turnset can be very illuminating.

This is a very helpful and fun community. Dive in!!

re barbarians: An attacking defense is best. I research horseback riding first, then on to monarchy. A horse or two will take care of almost any barb invasion.
To get gold to rush those caravans, try demanding tribute of any civ on your continent that is not hostile.
