The Age of the Comrade
GULP
Polite notes for players/readers:
1) The point of having Marco Polo's Embassy is to monitor the advances of the other civs. The French have Democracy which we can/have acquired by trading science. SoL is useful to break out of Monarchy to some form of corruption free government..
2) If caravans are stored for wonder building they should be food caravans...otherwise the supply commodities are compromised.
3) We don't need Temples in size 3 cities when we have both the Gardens and Mike's! Cities building Temples had inadequate Martial Law...so there were some red faces.
1260 - Extract some tribute; Swap techs with French for Democracy and Medicine
1280 - Sell 7 Barracks - we have Sun Tzu!
1300 - Statue of Liberty built - Revolution
1320 - Welcome to Communism Lutefisk Suburb founded as a caravan feeder for the capital. The French start Leonardo's Workshop so caravan production goes into full swing.
1340 - The Iron Curtain celebrates! Lutefisk builds Bank; Peace with Spanish...there is no point in waging an endless war which is eating up resources. Ironclads will kill the Spanish quickly 300 Tribute from Mongols. 250 Tribute from Romans; 200 tribute from French
1360 - Lutefisk builds University...to hurry up Steam Engine!
1380 - Chivalry now for Steam Engine; Spanish declare War!
1400 - Caravan trading with the capital - at this time in the game the bonuses are poor but the ongoing trade routes are worthwhile to maintain celebrations.
1420 - The Institute and Port Ironclad founded; Chemistry from Romans
1440 - Lutefisk builds Leonardo's Workshop Capital now size 12; Discover the Mongols have built Kazan on the south eastern edge of our main continent. East Lutefisk founded as another caravan feeder city. Oops asked for tribute from the Mongols too soon it's WAR! Will just have to bribe Kazan 100 tribute from Rome
1460 - Steam Engine Rush build Ironclads. Science is now @ zero except for one Einstein; Edge of Mankind founded
1480 - Operation Madrid - the Navy sails; Iberian Canal/Port Sleaze/Desert Song founded
1500 - Madrid and KRC captured Kazan bribed for 222g; Channel Packet founded

Great turn Scouse Gits!
I have downloaded and will upload tomorrow. (borrowed another friends PC for a while )
That was quite a play and it'll be hard to follow, but I will give it my best.Wizards sixth rule:

Great turns, SG2!!
I think the temples were built pre-Mikes. The barracks were clearly expendable once comrade Vlad snagged Sun Tsu for us. As for Democracy in France, I must admit that just slipped by me. Nice recovery -- AND we get SOL!
SG2, you must enlighten me on the art of exacting tribute. I rarely get a payoff, usually just an easy way to get war declared without ruining my reputation. I see you're financing things I could never hope to accomplish that way, clearly, I'm missing something here... What's the trick?
Hope it's not too frustrating playing with relative tyros...Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

I was presented with an open goal as there were several caravans in Lutefisk and the French handed over Democracy.
I didn't sell any existing Temples but found there were some under construction. I sold the barracks as they were redundant with Sun Tzu's War Academy.
Tribute One of the advantages of Marco Polo's Embassy is the ability to monitor AI gold. They are unlikely to cough up if they have less than 50 in their treasury. You may on some occasions be given a (useless) tech instead of money. Be prepared for War as a possible outcome.
Tribute can be obtained from civs below you on the Powergraph. I used to believe that it was necessary to have a city on the same landmass as the AI in question…but this not the case. In our game both the French and Romans handed over gold. Like many things in the game there are surprises. The advertised attitude of some civs is not a guide to success. An empire with a receptive attitude can suddenly declare war when you make the demand for cash. Unless you want war don't ask for tribute every turn. Every fourth turn is about right, though if you are Supreme and are next to a very weak civ you can sometimes be successful more frequently.
The best rule is: remember to do it!

Looks like a bonanza set of turns SG(2) -- just wait for the Mullahs....

SG[1] I like your idea for another succession game (after we've finished the current crop) featuring a fundamentalist government winning by spaceship

Are you suggesting this could be done by simply running to Fundy and staying in that govt? If so, how would you induce the AI to develop the needed techs in time for a launch?? In my (limited) experience, the AI can't be depended on to do this unless the human player is making significant tech progress.

Easy peasy - the research is performed by caravans in a thriving (large) celebrating Fundy society - you will have to join in -Jrabbit

the AI is reduced to a single zoo city - prefferably with lots of trade specials as a sink for our infinite caravans

I'm still at a more basic level in my use of trade, and only last weekend -- inspired by various SG references -- had my first Fundy victory.
(Much fun BTW -- The transition from "Will this work?" to total victory with MANY troops to spare was amzing. I ran to SOL, tactics, and espionage, then switched to fundy and --voila!) Not an early victory, but a resounding one! Almost too easy.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011
