  • Why on Deity do you start with 2 settlers??

I'm perplexed. When I play the Tutorial or Chieftain, I get one settler at the beginning.

Now I'm trying to play at Deity (and dear Lord, I am lost at that level.) But at the beginning of Deity I get TWO settlers?? Why?? Should I have known about this from the manual? If so I apologize for bothering anyone.

Actually, on other difficulty levels there is the possibility of wnding up with two settlers as well; your starting position just has to be bad enough. I think that the reason you always start with two settlers on Deity is for the purpose of making the game winnable on a small map. A human player is better than a computer player, so the AI "cheats" with all sorts of tricks like decreased production costs, etc. The human player's advantage doesn't really kick in for the first thousand years or so, as it's just a matter of explore, build city, build settler, repeat. I'm sure rah will tell me that he actually disbands his second settler as it just makes the game too darn easy.

I think it's because Deity is that much harder, and/or because you're close enough to enemy civs' starting points... I've noticed that I don't always start at Deity with two settlers on large maps. In a gigamap game, I've never started with two settlers, even at several levels above Deity... This was probably due to the sheer distances to even the nearest neighboring civ.

You always get 2 regardless of map size on diety.Don't really know why.The deity AIs don't always get 2.

Played king level MP game the other day and it was kind of annoying only getting 1.
The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

I remember that in Civ1 you could get 1 or 2 settlers at the beggining and it didn't matter if you were a king, a chieftain etc. It just depended on how lucky you were.

Rules have changed in Civ2 and I guess if you start with 2 settlers in Deity it's some sort of a head start (not that it really matters much).

You always get 2 starting settlers at deity and occasionally get 2 at emperor. I think its always 1 below that.

That's another reason to play Deity in MP games. It's bad enough having to restart when the host gets techs. In non-deity games you have to worry about the number of settlers that everyone has.
