  • One or two settlers?

Hi, I'm a relative newbie to civ2 - a SMAC player above all - but what I would like to know is: When do you get two settlers to start with, and when do you only get one? In SMAC, you can be guaranteed two colony pods to start if you play the equivalent of Emperor and Deity - this is apparently not the case in civ2. I am hoping all you die-hards can shed some light on this....

    Thanks,
    Mark13

P.S. Oh, and I'm using ToT, if that's any help.

Haven't played ToT, I'm a 2.42 kinda guy. The only help I can provide is this: On deity in 2.42 you always get 2 settlers to start with - no matter the settings you start out with.

It's been a looong time since I played a different level so I'm not sure of those. But I believe you always get one settler and one only on Chieftain - King, and one or two out of random chance on Emperor. But others will have to confirm this more accurately.

Strange - must differ between versions or something - I quite regularly play on Deity, and have, on many occasions, started out with one settler. In addition to that, I have played on King several times, and started out with two.

BTW, what is 2.42? I have the original Civ2 disk, not patched or anything - is there any way I can get the patch, if, indeed, it is a patch?

are you sure, Legman? always 2 settlers on deity?

yes, 2.42 is a patch, available at Apolyton AFAIK

but it's better to go and purchase Fan´tastic Worlds, the 2.78 version

I get two settlers on deity every time. But I play raging hordes. I suppose it could be a function of that. Or perhaps the number of civs in the game.

The 2.42 download can be found here.

I have been told that is the standard for comparing CIV2 games, strategies, etc. It is small and easy enough to upgrade. I might be wrong on this next part but you can even play the games that you saved before the upgrade without problems. I at least I haven't noticed any.

Thanks for the link, I am downloading the patch as I type....

              kcbob,
I usually play 7 civs, raging hordes, large map, deity. Yet, sometimes, I only get one settler. It is annoying, to say the least....I think it must be something to do with ToT. I'll have to have a look at the rules.txt, see if that has anything to do with it....

Thanks anyway for pointing that out, although I was aware of it.

I have ToT 1.1, which, I believe, is the only patch Microprose ever bothered to bring out.... *sigh*

Actually, just had a few trial runs with 2.42, and, lo and behold - two settlers!! Must be something (else? ) wrong with ToT....

I always start with 2 settlers. I know some people think it has to do with the civs.
I'm an experienced scenario designer, and I often notice that one or more AI civs start with only one settler. Now, I always play with the Persians, who always have two settlers-or do they? Some settings indeed let you start with only one settler. I believe there is some sort of regularity beyond this phenomenon. I guess it just needs to be explored a little.

I'm a newish scenario maker and already I have noticed the same phenomenon. Your chosen civ starts with the two settlers but often the other six AI civs start with only one. It seems to be independent of which civ you choose to play.

from my experience, you tend to start with two settlers on levels lower than deity, when the surrounding terrain is poor. you always start with two on deity of course. also, i think the closer you start to another civ, the more techs you get to start off with.. try a large world map playing as english with the celts starting off right next to you, and youll see what i mean. yep, the ai also often seems to only start with 1 settler.

There is a patch for ToT also, if you're using the unpatched version that might be the cause. I get two settlers every time at Deity/7civs on ToT, regardless of the variation (might not apply to Midgaard, which I've only started a couple times, but it's a scenario and would be controlled by the scenario file). If you haven't got the patch yet, it can be found at the Hasbro site (I think it's on Apolyton also).
