  • A small question...

While reading through some of the older posts, I've read about some sort of Institiute. The question: What on earth is it? I have an idea that it is (or was) a place/site where you're force-fed courses on playing the best Civ2 you can.

PS. If it still exists, can I sneak a peek?

Perhaps you speak of The Great Library. Not the wonder but a compilation of civ knowledge, techiniques, strategys etc

The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

Many thanks. I had known about the GL, but I didn't know exactly what they meant by Institute.

        Ahh, the Institute.

It's a semi-mythological location that succession game players are "sent to", should they make egregious tactical errors like missing sweet spots, building libraries in size 2 cities, etc.

So, there is no such place in actuality, but if you play succession games, you will get friendly advice of that nature from your fellow players.

The grand tradition of "robust constructive criticism" shall continue apace. The succession games are a great opportunity to see skilled players of the game showing off how good they are, but they also offer a chance to learn from their (sometimes very dumb) mistakes.
The Institute is the "reward" for those who choose to educate the rest of us in leading by bad example.

The institute I not an acctually site, Being "sent to the institute" simply means you have made a novice mistake.

I'm almost afraid to ask this question, but here goes...

What happens if you've read the GL 3 times and have heard every kind of "robust constructive criticism" that can be thrown at you, and you still make a dumb mistake? (Not that I ever intentionally would; plus I can't participate anyway 'cause I don't have MGE (and I can't get it 'cause the Patch is too big for floppies (my Civ2 comp and my 'Net one are different)))

Well there are lots of options.

You can bluff it out. Explain that it is all part of your new master strategy. That you are just completeing the research that will show that it is the best way of playing the game. That any day now you will post the proof.

You can say it was a slip of the fingers. You were distracted by a cow flying past the window. You thought you were playing the "Silly Rules" game and that move was not allowed.

You can say that it's a bad habbit you picked up in the form of game you're used to playing (MP, OCC, early landing, double production, whatever).

Mostly you just admit that you made a mistake and throw yourself on the mercy of the court.

Gosh! then you would have to admit to being human ...

It is, just, possible to play 10 or so moves in a Succession Game with a high enough level of concentration to avoid (at least the obvious) dumb mistakes - but is is a rare player here who would have the timerity to suggest that they had never slipped up.

Such is life - we are human, we err - but hopefully we have a great deal of fun meanwhilst .....

Actually, the Institute, IS a place.
A city of this name used to be build in many succession games. , mostly on tiny islands.
If I recall, we used to call it the Sticky Mouse Institute.

People have gone there for different reason, the main being hiding from public shame. But Lafayette, for example, has been reported to drink fine wine on the beach, aroud many vet spies on bikini ...

As for making mistakes, I did my share. Before the invention of the SM institute, I was ripped by Ribannah in an OCC succession game for forgetting a caravel outside for one turn, losing celebration, some may remember ...

But there are also questions about playing styles (ICS, perfectionist, mad trader) and being a maniac or not. In the Mongol SG, our victory being close I didn't spend hour micromanagin our cities. I just build units and send them. I didn't count shields as our production was just overwhelming.
