It makes me a bit concerned that they are researching Steam Engine. I hope they are not planning to build an Ironclad Fleet! They are (from the Powergraph) our closest rivals, and rising FAST.

Getting their maps would save a lot of exploration time. Getting them for free would be nice, but unlikely. Still, I don't want to say "at any cost". Maybe a tech in exchange...

The good thing about their acquiring one of our techs in exchange for their map is that they have no other contact to give that tech away to. Their map would be agood thing to see which way they're expanding. Meanwhile, as the second place civ, I think we can assume they will turn hostile against us and start ironclads heading our way. Time to be careful with our shipping routes!

By the time the Celt clads reach the Chartagian coast we can always bribe them to make a NON fleet

And with Magalans we can always outsail them so I wouldnt be too worried.

Just a thought... Perhaps we could get the Celts under control by giving the Mongols the ships and units to attack them?

                  Wouldnt work becouse we're supreme.

We can only gift them tech and money, and if we do get them to attack Celts they'll probably make peace after 2 turns anyway

I've mentioned before that one of my preferred strategies is to have a city on the same land (preferably in the middle) of all other Civs. That way it makes it easier to control their expansion quickly. When they haven't discovered your mainland, the AI seems to focus a disproportionate amount of resources towards the city you hold, because it's "in their way". However I am often fighting frequent wars with them, and have p****d them off royally by this point, so I don't know whether it would be as effective in this game.

It does however allow you to exert influence more quickly than having to sail botloads of troops/spies there to start with.

Even if you decide never to wage war or control them, it's cost you little to sit there watching them.

We have the option to gift them units, also.
