I think China is still our best trade route target. They are close and their cities are large.

I doubt there is much we could learn from seeing their maps, though.

As a repblic near one of our port cities, they are a valuable trade partner. As long as hostilities don't interfere with the delivery of caravans, there's no need to push for peace.

We should move a diplo out that way to steal feudalism if the Chinese break the cease-fire.

Absolutely, trade with the Chinese has been and will continue to be a major benefit to us.

Reminds me of the quote "I have been.. and always shall be...your friend" (Spock, Star Trek II) - he's obviously not got the right strategy mindset for Civ.

I don't often utilise trade routes in my games (being an "armaggedon" sort of guy). Do trade routes remain open if the respective Civs go to war? Also, what happens if one of the cities is captured/destroyed by another Civ. or Barbs?

The trade routes would remain active if we went to war or if the city was captured by us or another civ. They might be reduced in value if the city's terrain was pillaged or if it was reduced in size. If it was destroyed, I assume the trade route would cease to exist. You can even establish new trade routes while at war with the civ.

One thing to keep in mind though that traderoutes largely reduce when we capture a city. ( as much as 75% )

But that wont likely happen in this game
