After holding office for 4,240 years, your Prime Froeign Minister's lovely assistant has awakened him with news of our first contact with aliens.

We have made contact with the Japanese and traded with them. They have aggressively attempted to extort valuable GP from us. King Hydey has justly refused, and so we are in a state of war with them.

Please vote and take your +1 with notes re: our foreign policy on Japan.

Sure, get an embassy with the Japanese - it never hurts.

As your Minister of War in a plan to maintain a defensive posture, I say the only good war is one which *must* be fought, not one that *can* be fought. Let's establish trade routes with them to get the gold and science bonuses, but cut them out of the tech trade business.

Besides, they will eventually find someone else to fight with if we don't actually attack them. Let's get the embassy so we can learn who they have met (it will tell us who else is nearby) and so we can see who they are at war with (besides us).

i think it is a bit too hasty to run off to war right now, we need to learn how big they are and what kind of technology level they have. it wouldn't do to land some vet chariots and have them killed off by japanese crusaders

Exactly. We need to know what we are challenged with. Get the embassy first. Then we can plan what to do.

My sig is "Disce aut morere". It means "Learn or die". I suggest we learn first... To avoid the latter.

If we want to fight them we need information about them--> what beter way is there then an embassy...then we can start taking abuse of this knowledge(hell even trade techs if it's worth it for us)

Do we have any clue how strong they are (i.e. how much cities?).

I would suggest we capture one/two of them and than go for peace. This way we could get some techs out of them AND some of their cities for our expansion. So two advantages only for the price of a little war Of course we could establish an embassy too.

                An embassy would be useful.

the problem with that is that then we would be sharing a land mass with them and we could get dragged into the middle of a land war whenever the japanese feel like it. we would end up having an endless holding action against the AI or we would eventually have to take them down all the way

Since we already have a multi-continent setup for trade bonuses, I see no need to take Japanese cities. H Tower is correct -- We would forever be getting sneak attacked for "befouling lands that are rightfully ours [theirs]."

                    That's a waste of resources.

I voted to "Make love not war" becouse i think the advantage of trade far outnumbers the advantages of war. Lets establish an embasy and trade with them so much that if we do encounter a civ to make war with the japanese will be more than happy to join in for our defense. they seem to like fighting and that would suit them just fine.

A caravan and republic system seems best to me. Trade and improved city production will put us in a good position to advance more rapidly than the other civs. We'll be able to get the Wonders we choose, as well.

Why not a multichoice poll ?
I'm for an embassy then trade and science exchange.
