The Tale of the Years - 1778 AD
1766 - Egypt becomes a Monarchy and gets Engineering from the Indians, giving Navigation in return. They sign the "Lahore Pact".
We destroy 6 units of Barbs approaching Umbra as the battle-trial of the new Umbran Ironclad. Next, we take Pisae and get 143 gold. Having an Ironclad at Rome, I decide to test their defenses. Three defenders die in 1 assault, and the flag goes down. We kill a Roman Settler blocking the road, and move a Vet Musketeer into Rome, taking it and gaining 166 gold! An Ironclad outside Alexandria strips it of defenders, but there are no ground troops near enough to enter the city. I'm hoping it will draw out units from other (undiscovered) cities, and we have a Caravel of 3 Musketeers 1 turn away anyway.
We tip a Hut for 100 gold, and discover Oea (Carthaginian). I am sending all Ironclads toward the Roman/Indian landmass, since there don't seem to be any more Egyptian/American coastal cities to use them on. We are building a Diplomat in Thebes, to send to Memphis.
1768 - Americans attack Washington (oh, the irony, LOL!) and lose their Crusader. The Romans attack Citadel, and lose their Crusader.
Our Silk Caravan arrives in Babylon, 300 gold and our research into Conscription jumps a turn. That Caravel has a Dragoon aboard and will pick up 2 Riflemen from Brandenburg on the way back to the Egyptian area. We take Alexandria, get 52 gold. Eight Barb units (Elephants and Archers) land near Nova Hispania. The cities will have to defend themselves. There are 2 Ironclads nearing the coastline the Barbs must travel; but they are 2 turns away. The Barbs are massed too tightly to attack a few of them with the Dragoon available in Nova Hispania and Rivertown (there are Musketeers in the cities). I have a 2nd Dragoon completed in Nova Hispania to be available next turn.
1770 - Two Barb Elephants attack Nova Hispania. One dies and the other is barely alive; we lose a Musketeer. Two other Elephants head for Rivertown. The Archers move onto roads. We discover Conscription, and start researching Railroad (the other choices were Sanitation, Fundamentalism, Theology, and Theory of Gravity).
We deliver a Gold Caravan to Delhi, get 204 gold and beakers. The Thebes Diplomat bribes Memphis and they revolt for 440 gold; we get 35 back. It has 2 Pikemen and an Archer in it behind City Walls. That might have been awkward for our Dragoons if we had assaulted the place. Travellers report that Cleopatra is heard to murmur "You are dying, Egypt, dying".
Neopolis also agrees to Revolt for 546 gold. We get a Warrior and an Archer and 141 gold back. Our cities along that coast are now free of Romans in their midst. Consul Caesar is rumored to have ordered a "decimation" to punish his cowardly troops who fled to city during the revolt, pointing out that those in Rome died to the last man. An Ironclad travelling through the Citadel canal and reduces Veii. In honor of the Roman decimation, we send in a Dragoon to occupy Veii and get 133 gold. The Romans are down to 3 cities (1 unlocated).
1772 - Americans attack Washington again, losing another Crusader. I hope they keep up the attacks, it keeps New York weak. Carthaginians discover Writing, we tremble in fear at this. Barb Elephants die at Rivertown and Nova Hispania.
We attack remaining 3 Barbs with 2 Dragoons, killing all. No Barb Leader to ransom! We take Bombay, get 280 gold. An exploring Caravel/Dragoon team tips a Hut, 100 gold. Ironclads are closing in on the remaining Roman cities and patrolling the Babylonian and Carthaginian coasts. Other Ironclads are in various conquered ports, recuperating from battle. I am also collecting available Musketeers and Dragoons in various pickup points for transport to new fronts..
1774 - Egyptian government overthrown. Indians discover Gunpowder, Americans get it from GL. Indian government is overthrown. Egyptians send Crusader and Catapault from N of Alexandria; Americans send Legion from SW of Alexandria. Well, we know where the missing cities are! Panama Canal is re-established with 2 Silk resources (finally). Moving an Ironclad along the coast, I discover Giza (Egyptian) N of Alexandria and clear it of defenders. A Caravel will deliver defensive units next turn.
1776 - Egypt is a Republic (of 1 city), India becomes a Monarchy. New York revolts for 384 gold. We get GL, 109 gold, and a Musketeer and 2 Archers. Americans are down to 1 city, and I know where it has to be.
We occupy and take Giza, get 31 gold. EGYPTIAN CIVILIZATION IS DESTROYED! Cleopatra is captured in disguise in a Gypsy Caravan and becomes my "personal assistant". She is not allowed anywhere near snakes.
We find Girba (Roman) W of Cumae. In rapid succession, we take Antium (206 gold), Cumae (86 gold), and Girba (28 gold). ROMAN CIVILIZATION DESTROYED! Caesar is dragged from the rubble of Girba, screaming and kicking. He is assigned to construct a huge mosaic of "The Fall of Rome" for display to the Citizens. He is advised that if we do not like his efforts, he will become a practice target for rookie gladiators.
We kill some Indian units approaching Bombay, just to keep the troops active. An exploring Caravel/Dragoon team tips a hut and finds a friendly Musketeer.
1778 - We find Boston, but lose a Dragoon to an unknown defender. We discover Railroad and start researching Tactics. Civil unrest breaks out in Bombay and New York for unknown reasons (we had 3 units in each city, no new Citizens were added, and unhappies were fewer than happies). I create entertainers to quell the disturbances.
Boston offers to revolt for 1224 gold. Ouch! I ponder this for many minutes. Deciding finally that ending fighting on that landmass and freeing up at least 8 units for use elsewhere is valuable. Also, I'm not sure I want to assault a size 12 walled inland city with only Dragoons, and Tactics (Cavalry) is 4 turns away. I reluctantly sign the authorization papers and turn to Cleopatra for "consultations".
We get Boston, 116 gold back. AMERICAN CIVILIZATION DESTROYED! Lincoln is assigned to split rails for a decorative fence around the entire city of Apolyton.
We are supreme! We are unstoppable! The historical dialective imperative of the Glorious Apolyton Workers Paradise progresses inevitably toward the Ultimate Perfect State!
