  • Military plans, 1100ad

Currently we have 2 crusaders at Light, 2 more on the way to Shadow, and 2 soon-to-be musketeers several turns away. Light will be our staging area for the invasion of Egypt. Both new cities are building warriors for conversion to musketeers upon the completion of Leo's Workshop. :b

Once Adam Smith's is complete in egypt, we are one quick turn away from conquest. Four crusaders can take an unwalled city with anything better than terrible luck. A third ship will bring in musketeers to secure our acquisition and defend any crusaders left out in the open.

All other cities in the empire will soon have their musketeers - we shall be safe from attack!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has been suggested that we mop up the americans while we battle Egypt. The minister agrees that this is a good plan, provided that we

    1) Avoid war with any other civs
    2) Update our knowledge of geography before pushing far beyond our initial invasion. I fear our map of their continent is very outdated.

To continue a war, we will need healthy crusaders - or dragoons if the people choose to research leadership. Our mass of musketeers will provide us with ample units to secure strategic points on the amerigyptian continent.

He's the map of our target...

The red targets are sites that surely have cities.
The orange target is a likely city spot.
The pink square is where we should fortify a musketeer or two after sacking Elephantine.
The green squares are key defensive points. With many attackers nearby, we may as well sack Heliopolis while we are there. Once that is done, the second (hill) point will deflect any counter attack our fiendish neighbors can concoct.

I agree as Foreign Minister, but we still need more information about the enemies before attacking!

A question about the actual assault... Do you want to land Crusaders alone or are you assuming some defensive protection on the same landing square? Do you anticipate landing the Crusaders on the 3 squares adjacent to the city or backed off 2 squares?

I ask about defense because it would be really annoying for a couple of archers to wipe out our adjacent Crusader stacks (or a chariot to reach out 2 squares). On the other hand, having to attack with Crusaders from 2 squares away would render them less potent.

I was rather thinking to land 2 Crusaders and a musketeer each on 2 (or 3) adjacent squares to Elephantine. We don't know what is in Elephantine.

Maybe the first unit in should be a Diplomat!

Yes, I read the first post, of course!

He did not say where he where he proposed to land the Crusaders, and he had the musketeers used only after the city was taken. There's a difference!

There are two ways to approach the invasion:

                      1) Land each crusader on an adjacent tile and use the second movement point to attack, landing musketeers after it is clear where they are needed (i.e. either in the city or covering our wounded crusaders)

                      OR

                      2) Land each crusader under cover of a musketeer and attack on the next turn, doubling the number of potential strikes.

If we choose 2), we can guarantee the AI will add one unit to its defense - rush bought, appears the turn it is completed (unlike the human player ). This could very well be a catapult...

With only four crusaders, I think a quick strike is best. The AI almost never has more than 2 or 3 defenders in a city at this stage in the game. Remember, Egypt is a republic, and Elephantine has a max production of 4 shields. No way do they have 4 units there.

Of course, a diplomat could peek in to make it clear which choice is better.

good plan, but I prefer option 1
i don´t think that the ai is going to be ready to defend the attack of our crusaders, maybe they still have phalanx...
in that case we must attack now

Option 1 it is, then! I was worried that the Crusaders would not have the hitpower on the second move (that "I'm sorry sire, the troops are tired - 1/2 strength" message). I'll make sure it is a 1-turn attack.
