  • Just to reiterate something that you can do to turn your Civ2 game (any version!) into MGE, and thus be able to play the game or view the save (it worked for me, so it's effetive).

CivFanatics.com has made an unofficial "upgrade" of any Civ2 version to MGE available for download here - and I can vouch that it works!

So, as long as you have SOME version of Civ2, you can upgrade it with this to be able to see the savegame used here. The only drawback is that you need a Civ2 CD (any version) in to play the game, but then again that shouldn't be any problem for those who actually bought a legitimate copy, should it?

    • Gah! I downloaded the upgrades (all 5 parts), unzipped 'em into C:/mps/civ2, and it won't work. I start up Civ2 and it's the regular old game... Am I missing something here? It's extremely frustrating to be relatively computer illiterate. Help, please!

      • Did you make sure you overwrote all the old files with the new ones in the zips? Otherwise the game will find the old ones in the place it's looking for them, and just fire up your old version.

          • It still won't work! I clicked "Yes to all" for every override thing... Still the same old Civ. And I can see the files with their little gear thingy pictures and such, but they just aren't working when I run the game! And when I try and run the game out of the patch (by clicking on the Civ2 icon in the 3rd part) it says I don't have the proper xaemon.dll file, but I can see that file right there in MGE 2 (or was it 4?). Never the less... Do I have to combine all 5 components in one folder or some such madness? Anything?!?

It's immensely frustrating... But oh well. I guess I just wasn't meant to enjoy the fruits of MGE.

In the course of my daily life, Mac's do not exist.

In fact, I am sure they are a myth, and if they did exist, they couldn't be nearly as good as PCs anyway.

cinch - Sorry to hear that, tonight I will try to reinstall the patch over the original game and I'll let you know what happens. Perhaps I can find out what I did that I can't remember...

              • You have to have all of the files from all of the 5 patches in the same folder yes, I did this during the weekend and it works!

                • Progress! Thanks alot, James, but it's still not totally working properly. That is, I moved all of the files directly into my civ2 directory, except tiles.dll, because the computer won't let me. It says 'tiles.dll is already in use by windows'... Any idea why that may be? Or how/if I can fix it? (I tried putting a shortcut to tiles.dll in, but it had no effect on the error message I talk about below...)

Also, when I start civ2 now, it says Multiplayer Gold, and the menu has multiplayer on it, but when I click on Multiplayer it just takes me to High Scores, and the new scenarios aren't there either.

Furthermore, when I put in Civ2, when the menu screen comes up, I get a message saying "Error- Resource Not Found... File: /source/smeds/port.cpp. line 624..." then it has some stack traces and memory info... Anyone know what the hell that means?

If you don't, no problemo. Thanks for your help anyway.

                            • cinch, DOS is a cinch:

                              C:> copy c:\the_directory\the_file c:\new_directory\the_file

should copy the existing dll into a new location. Change the directory names above the match whatever they are supposed to be on your drive. The worst thing that can happen if this goes wrong is that you will have an extra copy of that file somewhere else, too.
