    CRIB SHEET

Here is my take on the choices listed. BTW, the Poll List is ordered by my preference.

    POLYTHEISM
This is preferred because it will allow us to research Monotheism, which will give us an attack unit next.

    The WHEEL
A weaker attack unit, but this allows Engineering, which leads to Sanitation and Invention.

    THEORY of GRAVITY
For J S Bach Ike's and the possibility of getting some Trade Bait, on the chance that Bach Ike's, being available, indicates few if any have researched it yet. A toss-up for second choice.

    WARRIOR CODE
For Fuedalism then Chivalry, or Iron Working then Magnetism for Galleons
WARNING: Fuedalism will end Warrior-rush possibility.

    PHYSICS and CHEMISTRY
    not particularly timely, IMHO

      Trade Choices

On the off chance that we, in some way, get offered a list of techs to choose from by one of the AI...

Some discussion would be helpful here. I lean toward Espionage so we can bribe, steal, and make embassies. Stealing will be tricky as we have to maintain Spotless; but, it is not impossible to arrange.

As a second choice, either Fundy or Commie Gov't tech would ease some of the Happiness problems we face.

      What do others think??

Stealing Espionage would be impossible, since we have forbidden ourselves the very Diplomats that could steal the Espionage tech.

If some civ has Espionage to trade, that might be the very best thing we could get. I've never played without Diplomats before, and it is really making things difficult!

I was not thinking of stealing, but rather, of the list offered upon taking a city.

Could be thinking too far ahead...

You said "I lean toward Espionage so we can bribe, steal, and make embassies". I interpreted that to mean stealing techs.

I am anxious to get to Spies, personally. And I am more than willing to take other civ cities to gain techs.

Yes, we need Espionage. Not a single Foreign Affairs mission can be done without them!

Poly then Mono sounds good here. I pushed for Horseback Riding to get the MoW some scouts now the WarSparrow needs soldiers!
              Consul.

Back to the ROOTS of addiction. My first missed poll!

I voted Polytheism, and would feel much more comfortable as Minister of War if we could at least build Elephants (though Crusaders would be even better of course )

One minor correction though, one of Monks arguements in favour of Theory of Gravity is that it is on the road to Theology (and J.S.Bach's Cathedral) and while I don't want to question a Monk on a question of Theology, but I don't think ToG is on the tech path to Theology (though I must admit, it made me laugh, thinking about Newton and the Apple, and getting hit in the head causing him to have a religious experience which leads to Theology )

I hope no one takes offence to my making light of a weighty issue, though I wonder if it would be as weighty on a planet with a lesser gravitational pull perhaps we will find out when we reach Alpha Centuri

/me Minister of Trade Wars talking about issues he knows nothing about (much like War and Trade)

Well said, Sparrowhawk!! Almost full marks; minus 5 points for missing that Ike's College is also available completeing the dyslexic analogy between ToG and Theo. Apparently, when I have taken too much of pain pills, my childhood reading problem kicks in. That it took almost two days before anyone commented may mean I do not suffer alone. At least the poll has the correct choice, for which I am thankful.

                  So...whooops...my bad...neveeeer mind.

I didn't notice because first, I leave Science matters to the Minister of Science and second, because I can follow the tech chart easily enough if I have it in front of we but can't memorize any of it at all (as some people seem to be able to do).

I've already voted, but one thought struck me. If possible, we would (probably) be better off researching a tech that the AI hasn't discovered yet even in preference to a more useful one that the AI already has. We would then have chance of swapping our new tech to more than 1 AI civ and therefore gain multiple techs from it. Of course without embassies and with very little contact with the AI, there are a few minor practical difficulties with this approach.

All that plus..."We see you have discovered XXX. We DEMAND you give it to us or it shall be War."...or something similar.

This will be interesting, I am sure.

Yes ... that's another minor problem.

It looks as if our foreign minister will need to think about the characteristics of each civ we're up against and try to manipulate the order we speak to them. We might be able to swap with a "reasonable" civ which might then allow us to apease the aggressive civ and still be able to trade.

Of course we may be at war with everyone on the planet by then.

This gets to why I think it would be good to pick up the Salt caravan and head West toward the "Find City"-indicated location of the Celts. They are neutral and finding a big Celt city to deliver to could lead to an opportunity to "buy" an alliance with them.

We ask for alliance; they will ask for all or most of our cash. Therefore, we should spend most of it, on temples or rushing units, before contact. This late in the game, the alliance may not be useful. But if they give us a tech or two it might be worth it. I give this scheme 30% probability of success at most. But we have to try something I think.

The attitudes of the Suefolk and Egyptians make it imperative that we do not meet them until we can complete Poly/Mono and build some attackers. A meeting will result in a War declaration, probably without any dialog. Therefore, I hope the approaching explorer is not sent to the East.
