I should also point out that the banana vote suggests we should stay at home and not explore. If anyone wants to change that by stating a directional preference, they can do it by posting. Otherwise, we might just stay at home on our island. Voting has consequences and I will follow them even if the Citizens' advice is bad!

I am only your humble representative, after all.

Here is what I propose, (and I suppose to be literal, the direction I suggest is "Southeast" but my point is that we don't go in one direction but explore around the island (I would hate for us to pick a direction and move 15-20 squares in that direction and just miss an island 10 squares away).

Obviously the arrow does not follow actual number of squares, but I think you get the idea, with the point being uncovering the maximum amount of area possible.

Note for Consul Cavebear: Actually a vote for Banana does not mean a vote to not move (which could have been an option) but rather not wanting any of the options given. The Circular pattern I suggested above is not a new idea, but rather one which I am reitterating from someones suggestion early in the game. I had hoped it would be an option in the poll.

I don't think it beneficial to explore all the ocean squares around our island to see the closest land. For one thing, it would be inefficient. For another, we want a place to build a few cities.

Exploring "all the squares" would indeed be inefficient (no need to adjust the path of the boat to explore one or two blackened squares), but what would truly be inefficient would be to move in a given direction (south for example) for 20 squares before finding land, landing our "explorers" there, and settling our second city, and discovering later that there was a land mass 10 squares away. One point we in agreement on, is that we "want a place to build a few cities", the question is, what is the quickest way to find that land mass. Another point we are in agreement on is that we need to explore (no xenophobs in this game ). Perhaps our most efficient search pattern would involve the fact that we know there is no land within ?7? squares, so if we do search in a circular pattern, that we start out 7-10 squares away??

/me Minister of Science and Exploration...opps, maybe scratch that last part

I don't think that's what a banana vote means. It simply means that the voter has no preference among the options in the poll - this could be because they dislike all options or because they like the options equally.

Staying at home because 2 citizens voted for the banana might lead the those who do not appreciate your fine qualities to suspect a lack of leadership.

You have convinced me to consider the whole of the votes and not regard the "banana" votes too literally. .

to little too late maybe but for my vote I think east is the best option, and I would also try to find a single city site near a "friendly" AI first. our lowly reputation will likely make them willing to leave us for a time, and the trade bonus would be a needed boost. Now that we can celebrate at size 12 be can crank out settlers as fast as the shields will allow and grow back the next turn. Plus that give us another city to help with caravel production, of course first priority there would have to be defenders and city walls.
