what do the stars by some user's names on the opening page of the forum mean?

It's the overall rating given to the specific thread by the members that have rated it with the thread rating feature.

It's useless in most places on this forum. I remember people saying it has use in specific forums, and I wish the thread ratings were restricted to those forums alone.

Now that we have the Apolyton Directory I don't see what use the thread ratings are?

Actually, I think you have misread DM's post...

On the front page, where it says "active users", some members have asterisks at the end of their names.

I too wish to know what this means

Well, it's simply just a standard feature of vBulletin which could be turned off at any time for those forums that don't need it, but I assume it's in use in all forums as some people use it in all forums they visit and/or post.

              Frozzy,

actually you seem to be right. Someone asked this question several months ago here, so the answer could be found if one has the patience to browse through the posts (I can't come up with any good search criterias). I don't remember what the explanation was, but I assume it could be banned users or ones waiting to confirm their e-mail addresses. I don't have any other explanation.

Could someone post a screenie of the names with stars near them? I can't seem to find any.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Me neither. Perhaps someone's "seeing stars" or "has stars in their eyes" or maybe they're "STARting to go blind"

The users with stars by their names are the people who have chosen to remain on hidden or stealth mode for the forums.

Sometime they show up in the list of active users. It's happened before. Obviously whatever was causing them to be there has been fixed.

So instead of being stealthy they show up with flashing great big stars by their names.

                      Well, stars, anyway.
