so, an example: img src="flag.png" title="Republic of XYZ"

I'll add a vote to this suggestion. And yes the title tag will work on IE as well.

        • Cote d'Ivoire? Ireland? Why bother having two flags exactly the same for different countries.

Perhaps we could merge Romania and Chad's flags too.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

          • Just realised why that flag didn't look right, its Ireland's rotated through 180 degrees.

Ignore my first comment, my second one about Chad and Romania is valid though.

                • Alrighty, since my thread was closed (just when the debate started to really take off, of course), I hereby repeat my request to include the flag of the Iroquois League of Nations.

Ditto Poland and Indonesia, unless I'm drastically wrong.

the flag of the Iroquois League of Nations.
And I demand the flag of the Republic of Australia, a proud nation that will exist in the future.

You're not drastically wrong, another case of 180.

I noticed that as well, a few days ago. I assume it's temporary, but maybe Markos or Dan knows more?

                          • Ribannah, when did they adopt a flag?

The management have declined to include other nations or countries that no longer exist, like the USSR. I think Mark has mentioned recognition by the UN.

Why should there be a dispensation?

                            • No dispensation is needed, as the Iroquois League still exists.

Recognition has existed at least since 1923 when Cayuga chief Descaheh was the first 'indigenous' representative in Geneva to what was then the League of Nations, and has been re-confirmed by the UN in 1977. Quite a few Iroquois leaders have spoken at the UN over the last decades.

The Iroquois League has the same status at the UN as Palestine. They do not accept this as the final outcome. Together with the Soschone, Hopi and several others who never ceded their independence (most Amerind nations did), the fight for full membership goes on.

The flag depicts the original wampum belt of Hiawatha, which has always symbolized the unity of the Iroquois. It shows the five principal member tribes. From left to right: the Seneca, the keepers of the Western Door; the Cayugas, the "people of the marsh" and "keepers of the Great Pipe"; The Onondaga, who were the "name bearers" who kept the wampum belt that contained the history of the Iroquois; the Oneida, the "stone people" symbolized by the Great Tree; and lastly the Mohawk, the "keepers of the eastern door".

So it was 'adopted' in 1451 (best estimate of when the league was formed). It was in 1977 or maybe a few years before that it started to get multiplied in the shape of a common flag. Today you can find a great many copies of the flag in both Canada and the USA.

The Iroquois also have their own passports, used by ao the National Iroquois lacrosse team that participates in world championships.
