• What does one do if he only has a hotmail e-mail?

A friend of mine (again, from class, just like Taurus and Yoav) has expressed interest in registering Apolyton, after I told him about it.

However, his ISP doesn't provide him with a POP3 mailbox, and his only e-mail is a hotmail one.

So what can he do to register?

I've registered with a Hotmail address.

No problems at all.
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.

I also have a Hotmail account.

/me waits for someone to do the DL dance

Ah, forget waiting.

/me accuses himself of being a DL

Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

Tell him to get a Fastmail account.
It is much better than hotmail, and faster too. Less advertisements, etc.

Or not. Some people are masochists.

In the "old" days... free email services like Hotmail and others weren't allowed to be used for creating log ons.

However... that changed a ways back. Tell him to just sign up with his Hotmail account.

I will say first that it is unusual to hear of an ISP not providing its clients with a POP3 mail account today, but in any event as others have already stated there is no problem in their registering with their Hotmail account.

Yeah... I remember trying to join in teh summer of '99, but I couldn't because I only had a Hotmail account.... As a result I missed out on the golden era of teh OTF...

Ah well.. at least I've wasted a good chunk of my life here in the past two years.

I only registered because I wanted to give comments in the Civ3 polls (remember the days? ), in mid June 2000. But since I only had a yahoo account I asked (politely) to a guy called MarkG (wich I soon found out that he wasn't just the webmaster, but a co-owner himself) if I could join Apolyton with a yahoo account.
A day or two later he mailed me saying I had authorization to login.
I think I was one of the firsts using free mail accounts around here. Lots of kudos for Mark for "breaking" the rules for me.

When was this changed? When I registered in January, i used a non-ISP email but then in March I got a PM from Mark telling me to change it

Hotmail is tasty!

...that was spur of the moment typing, and I apologize. I do use Hotmail, however.

He told me he tried to join before, but his addy wasn't accepted.

THough perhaps it was "long time ago".

I'll let him know.
