  • Need for the :\ smiley.

I think it is high time we had one of these on apolyton. The nearest equivalent is the but I don't think it is suitable, and is too extreme. So Stefu, I commission thee to develop a smiley, and Markos or Dan, do the business of implementing it. I administrate CGN now so don't tell me it is too much work, because that is bollocks

Is it :\ or :/ ? And does :s convey the same meaning?
    Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

:s That is crap. We need a proper smiley. And :\ or :/ or :|, it doesn't matter, we just have to define one of those to use...I don't mind...

        How about this?

I couldn't really decide what the appropriate expression should be, though.

Yeah, I agree, but would a :S smilie be the same? What do they all mean?

Wouldn't :| be like the version on FFZ?
            Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

The way I learned it, :| is 'indifferent'/'undecided' while :s indicates something is 'incoherent' (similar to , I suppose). However, I know there can be cultural differences in the meaning of smilies...

Edit: :/ often indicates sceptisism BTW.

I was always under the impression that ":/" meant something like "Oh well"

I would have thought covers it pretty well. Perhaps not quite the level of surprised as mixed with pity as mixed with disgust, though.

That's always been what I thought it meant, like 'dammit' or 'bugger'

Oh for the days when Poly had not picture smilies and reliance on simple punctuation or verbal expression was absolute.

Why not learn to do it with words? That way, you could learn to become articulate at the same time.
