They aren't acting meaner. It's just competitiveness.

When MtG got made mod (you remember the April fool gone wrong?) MarkG started a quota system for bannings, thread closures and deletions. The theory is that the Civ III release has brought in a lot of traffic so bandwidth space needs to be made by rotating regular posters out of the OT using periodic bannings.

I have it on good authority that MtG's quick draw banning and closing style of moderatorship was a lot more successful, early on, than Ming's humorous style and he soon fell way behind on the quotas. Ming got a stiff talking to from DanQ and MarkG about pulling his weight in the bannings department and Mark assigned MtG to give him special banning, thread closure and deletion lessons.

Behind the scenes Ming is actually fighting for OT poster rights but it's a losing battle.

This is all 100% true, it's in the top secret Staff forum. They have performance graphs, banning and deletion tables. Everything. I have this on good authority from one of the staff but they insisted that they remain annonymous for obvious reasons.

I don't consider them meaner, but a lot more sensible. Over sensible, IMO. I really can't forget or understand that time where MarkG closed my thread about what was IMO Firaxis' late open beta testers requisition short after Jeff announcement. He closed it because he wanted everything in the same thread relationed with the beta testers request.
I was really angry with it, because the way I saw how he was seeing my thread was just spam, when I think the subject was different.

This is my example. I've seen others where threads in the OT are closed because mods feel somehow the rules are being broken, when some users just think there's nothing wrong with it. Wich means that we're talking about personal judgement calls.

But one thing I'm pretty sure of: some users need to start facing Apolyton as just a hobby, not something where you could prove that you're a better person than others or anything.

I've studied the data for nearly 7 years now and the only conclusion can be that they are bastards of the second highest order. MarkG is bucking for highest order, but he's got a little work to do.

Perhaps the moderators are inspired by the fine example of Chris (The Iron Fisted and no damn velvet glove about it) Poulos over at Civfanatics.

Insulting mods would be punishable by three weeks if they get any meaner... Except MtG, who'd just 'take you outside' to FFZ, and flame your ass off over there.
