  • Now you've tried Civ 3 and SimGolf, what do you think?

Please ONLY vote if you have played Civ 3 and tried out the SimGolf demo, unless you intend to vote that you will never even try it out you hate the idea so much.

When opinions were canvassed before the release of Civ 3 there were many posters here who felt it heretical that Sid should be focussing on a different game and considered it an unlikely purchase. Well, the demo is now available and some of you must have sneakily tried it out. Has it changed your mind?

I never intend to buy SimGolf or try the demo. Sid should have concentrated on Civ 3.

If golf is a good walk spoiled, then Simgolf is good spamming time wasted. I chose the first option

I have to admit I found the demo addictive. Perhaps its the thrill of the new, or at least a different blend of existing sim styles, but the combination was quite addictive. SimGolf is likely to be coming to my PC within weeks of its release. The recent explosion of "tycoon" games looked really promising until the reviewers unceremoniously panned the lot of them. SimGolf seems to have caught me at a time when I feel the need to play this sort of game a bit but SimCity 3000 is too old and easy and Monopoly failed to interest me because they couldn't even be bothered to change the steet names to the UK versions, let alone the architecture. Go Sid Go

I tried the demo and I wasn't impressed. The "Sid Meier" and "Sim" tie-ins will no doubt push up the sales, but it just wasn't a lot of fun. Since I never could bring myself to like The Sims either, maybe that's the problem, there is some subtlety I am missing. I did like Rollercoaster Tycoon, btw, but most of the "Tycoon" games since then have ranged from mediocre to awful.

I voted that I liked Civ3 better. In due respect, I have to admit that I've been playing the SimGolf demo more in the past couple weeks than other games, and I do find it addictive... to a point. That point seems to be when I can't improve the "main character's" golfing abilities any further, and I can't really do anything more with the course.

I also have to admit that I have always found entertainment in "sim" type games, going back to the original SimCity, and yes I do own The Sims. What I didn't like about the demo is that it is unfinished ("no duh - it's a demo!"), but it also full of readily obvious bugs, but does show some potential if the pricepoint is right (I'm not going to spend $60 on it, that's for sure).

Civ3, for all it's bugs, I find more entertaining. Maybe because it has more randomness potential to it, not to mention a broader scope. SimGolf, to me, seems more like some hobby program concept turned commercial... a lighthearted way to bide time, but the Civ series is more something to suck away precious hours of your life (looking back at the time I spent on Civ 1 and Civ2, no other game or series ever came close to comparing). Civ3 also offers user configurability, which is getting better with the fan-created utilities, and I can only hope the game's editor improves over time too. Somehow I doubt SimGolf will be able to deliver that aspect.

I take number two, though I believe in number one...Sid should only have focused on Civ3 to make Civ3 a much better game than it already is, but Simgolf demo is ok, but I wouldn't buy it.

You're damn right about that one, most of them was awful, both in graphics and gameplay. The last tycoon game (except for SimGolf) I like is Car Tycoon, it is interesting when talking about gameplay, and the graphics would proberly also have been great if it wasn't because I have a voodoo 3 (Voodoo 3 + Car Tycoon = All ground in the game is BLACK).

There's no tycoon like Microprose's Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

I thought that SimGolf was really good, I didnt think it was going to be addicitive. The reason it has a sim feel to it is because they worked with Maxis to make it, I will get this game when it comes out and I will probably play it more than Civ3 - and I don't even like golf!
