Why no MP3's?

In the "Why we all like Germans" thread in the OT I was going to post my favorite passage from Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C-Minor, but after working with the freakin' sound player/mixer I could not get the entire thing under 200k in .wav format, though it would fit easily in MP3 format.

In short: why can't we upload MP3's?
