Branching threads are good since you can ignore all the replies to some off-topic comments somebody made. Or alternatively you can ignore all the on-topic replies You also get to notice wether somebody has commented on replies you have made, so flames could be skipped or concentrated upon, dependent on your disposition of the day.
BTW one of the premier boards on the Web, Slashdot, uses a branching thread format.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

The problem with branching threads is that I tend to reply to more than one post at a time.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

Each format has its own pros and cons.
When I first came to 'Poly I was highly annoyed by the fact the I had to wait for the entire thread to finish loading before I can read anything. I was also annoyed by the fact that I had to read all the impertinent messages together with the ones I wanted to read.
On the newsgroups I could watch the threads in which I am interested, and glance through the headers to see if there's anything that strikes my fancy

The "skeptical" smiley is one that I asked for!!
I still prefer to tease and troll (when I do) without smilies as it robs the remarks of their "edge" too much.

It inserts any special symbol at the end of your post. I've been practicing my cutting-and-pasting skills quite a bit.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

I really dislike branching threads. Its very easy for the reply you posted to get lost under another the thread coming from a different reply to the same post, and it is hard to get a proper response.
In a way, we can do this here, with the subject of the post line. If you reply with a quote, it automatically puts a re: The other person's topic. It wouldn't tkae too muh effort to change it to say reply to GP or whatever.Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?
