Two objections to DLs that I have seen cited are that they take the sting from banning (the offender simply continuing to post in a different personae) and a person may be more willing to badmouth other posters and to breach the site's rules hiding behind the additional anonymity afforded by the DL.
It seems to me that if advance notice were given to the mods (but not to anyone else) that a person intended to register a DL that might go a long way to meeting these points. A ban would subsequently take effect on all registered log ins.
I have no real idea as to why running multiple log ins is fun but self evidently there are posters who enjoy it and there are others who seem to like trying to detect them. An accomodation which allowed the innocent aspect of the thing might therefore be worth considering.
It might also save MtG some of the time he invests in this (assuming he doesn't get a kick out it).
