....I could do one like that, I just don't want to!

Mind sharing what is evidently a trade secret with me, and telling me how to get a transparent background on this .gif file using Photoshop 5.5?

I think there is that option File > Export > GIF89a

it may work (if you have a layer with no background).

Or, try getting some shareware 100K program from www.download.com that deals with GIFs.

Photoshop 5.5 is wierd as it has lots of very strong functions but doesn't have really simple and basic ones.

That's why for quickie graphics I use Paint Shop Pro 5! not 6 or 7, as they don't work well with hebrew, and7 is just so full of preset filters for mindless newbies who aren't willing to work long enough with Random Clouds and Blur to get every effect possible

Sure, you deserve a title (seriously, that'd be cool). Can I be your flunky? Is there any way I can try PSP5 or 7 before buying?

Btw, yea it does have that export function. I was scared of trying it though, but since you mentioned it I'll look into it.

You're already my flunky. And it has nothing to do with graphics

I'm not sure, as I didn't use photoshop for GIFs for quite a while. They're copyrighted you know

And I could tell you where could you try them.

ICQ me. the admins don't like these dirty talks here.

could I have this picture altered so that I can use it is my avatar without a massive loss in quality, please?

It is a cartoon that looks amazingly like the real me, and is even using a computer.

Nope, doesn't do transparent gifs, and you have to play with the palette. File Save for Web is the way to go, and also lets you do jpgs and pngs with more control than the standard export filters.

You just have to know how to use it. I've used photoshop since 1.0, and when you're used to it, you can do anything with no problem.

Photoshop 6 rocks though, with the added vector support.

                            First try

                            Seeker,

This is my first try. Doesn't look too great but you just couldn't have a lot of details in 64x64...

It does, at least from PhotoShop 5 on when they started to have the filter built-in. Anyway when you do the export you get to choose how big the palette you want (max 256 colours) and you can choose a trasparent background. The trick is to first convert the image into "indexed colour" before you export the file.

The problem of using GIFs is it uses LZW compression, which is patented by Unisys. Better off with PNG (portable network graphics) files.

You can use PhotoShop to save in PNG format also.
